After all, Yates had directed four blockbusters in a row for the studio, all stupendously reviewed. Nothing like it has been seen since. Yates' four Harry Potter movies also grossed significantly more than what Nolan's films had till then. But while Nolan always made it a point to make an original movie in between his Batman hits — movies like The Prestige and Inception — Yates devoted himself to the Harry Potter franchise for over half-a-decade. Of course, he returned to the series some years later, but not before he attempted to launch a new franchise with The Legend of Tarzan, which is now heading to a new streamer for the holidays.
Released in 2016, The Legend of Tarzan featured Alexander Skarsgård in his biggest role yet. The movie also starred Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson, Djimon Hounsou, and Christoph Waltz, and followed the King of the Jungle returning to where his story began, after trying and failing to assimilate into polite society. Produced on a reported budget of $180 million, Tarzan grossed a little over $350 million at the worldwide box office — this wasn't nearly enough to justify a sequel. Reviews were also mixed; the movie is now sitting at a 36% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "The Legend of Tarzan has more on its mind than many movies starring the classic character, but that isn't enough to make up for its generic plot or sluggish pace."
David Yates Returned to the Harry Potter Franchise
Yates went on to launch a Harry Potter spin-off series with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and directed two sequels — Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore — before the series was abruptly halted following mediocre reviews and declining box office returns. Skarsgård went on to headline The Northman, another commercially disappointing movie that featured him as a beast of a man, while Robbie delivered the blockbuster hit Barbie a few years ago.
You can watch The Legend of Tarzan on Prime Video beginning December 30, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
