Capcom's modern era has delivered major new successes in franchises like Monster Hunter and Resident Evil, but some other IPs have mostly fallen by the wayside. One that belongs to the latter category is Dead Rising, which has only received a single, contentious remaster in the nine years since 2016's Dead Rising 4. According to a new leak, that's all set to change.

A report from MP1st claims that a new entry in the Dead Rising series has been in development since 2023 or before. The new game, set in Hollywood, will feature the return of iconic series protagonist Frank West. MP1st suggests that the game may take place before Dead Rising 2 as a direct sequel to the original, but notes that this aspect hasn't been officially confirmed.

The MP1st report is still missing a lot of specifics, but it does contain some other interesting claims. Frank's journey will intersect with some other "major survivors," and previous characters like Isabela Keyes are set to make a return. It also reportedly features the return of a time limit, a classic mechanic that was abandoned in Dead Rising 4.

There's currently no suggestion of a potential release window for the next Dead Rising, but it might not be any time soon. If the game started development in 2023, it likely entered the pipeline after some other rumored Capcom projects, like remakes of Resident Evil 0 and Code Veronica.

The direction of the Dead Rising series debate has proven unsatisfying to many fans of the original title, with Dead Rising 4 receiving the weakest reviews in the series. A new game, however, could be a chance to get things back on track. Capcom has been on a roll recently, seemingly shaking off the inconsistency of its early 2010s output.

Zombie games might not have the same luster in 2025 as they did in 2006, but Dead Rising still has some passionate acolytes. The franchise's idiosyncratic personality sets it well apart from games like Dead Island, even if it's easy to get the names mixed up. More broadly, the success of Dying Light: The Beast earlier this year proved that there's still some juice left in the genre.

For now, there's little to do but wait and see if the MP1st report pans out. Frank West might be raring for more over-the-top Dead Rising action, but he won't be unleashed until Capcom is nice and ready.
