Commanders TE Zach Ertz could make history in Week 13

The Washington Commanders are preparing to take on the Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football in Week 13.

The Broncos are entering the game with a 9-2 record, while the Commanders are sitting at 3-8. It may not seem like the Commanders have much to play for, but there's one player who has the chance to do something historic.

Zach Ertz has been one of the best tight ends of his generation. In fact, Ertz has been one of the pass-catching tight ends of all time. Now, against the Broncos, Ertz only needs two catches to pass Shannon Sharpe for fifth-most receptions by a tight end all-time.

Ertz currently has 814 catches while Sharpe has 815. The top four tight ends are Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Travis Kelce, and Antonio Gates. Notably, Sharpe, Gates, and Gonzalez are in the Hall of Fame, while Witten and Kelce almost certainly will be eventually.

It's also notable that Ertz could pass Sharpe this weekend because Sharpe spent most of his playing career with the Broncos. The veteran played with the team from 1990-99, and then again in 2002 and 2003.

So far in 2025, Ertz has played in all 11 games and has 39 catches for 387 yards and four touchdowns. It hasn't been the best season for Ertz, though, as his most productive seasons came with the Philadelphia Eagles. Ertz surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in 2018 and caught at least 70 passes in six different seasons.

Ertz has earned three Pro Bowl berths in his career and won Super Bowl LII as a member of the Eagles.

The Commanders and Broncos are set to kick off from Northwest Stadium on Sunday at 8:20 p.m. ET. Ertz has had fewer than two catches in just one game this season, so it seems pretty likely that we will see history made.
