Stargate’s Streaming Reboot Has One Huge Advantage Most Sci-Fi Revivals Don’t

Amazon MGM announced that a Stargate revival is in the works, and it has one advantage up its sleeve that most sci-fi franchises are lacking.

The Stargate franchise is finally making its grand return with a new Prime Video series, and fans have plenty to rejoice about. Since the cancellation of Stargate Universe in 2011, there hasn't been a new Stargate series in nearly fifteen years, meaning this new Stargate series is a chance to draw fans old and new to the franchise. It also fulfills Amazon's goal of tapping into MGM's most significant properties after it brought the film studio in 2022. The biggest news, however, is the creative talent behind this new series.

The new Stargate series will feature Martin Gero as showrunner, with Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich as producers, and Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi as consulting producers. Gero was a story editor on Stargate Atlantis in addition to writing for Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Universe, while Wright and Mallozzi helped create all three shows. Devlin and Emmerich wrote the Stargate movie, with Emmerich serving as director; it served as the basis for the entire franchise. In short, the new Stargate will have creators who've been with the franchise since its inception, giving it a leg up on other sci-fi revivals.

Martin Gero Knows What It Takes to Make a 'Stargate' Show

When the Stargate reboot was first announced, Martin Gero gave a brief statement to Deadline that touched on his history with the franchise. "I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA," Gero said. Unlike most showrunners who board a reboot or a revival of a classic franchise, Gero actually has the experience to back his words up. His work on the previous Stargate series means that he knows the right mix of mythology, sci-fi elements, and character dynamics needed to bring a new take on the franchise to life. On top of that, Wright, Mallozzi, Devlin and Emmerich can also bring their own expderience to the table and make this feel like a Stargate series

Gero and the other Stargate producers also have experience working with constraints, which is more than likely going to come in handy with the new Stargate series. Streaming shows tend to cut back on the number of episodes in a season of television, usually only doing 8-10 episodes instead of the standard 22. That usually comes with an extended budget, which means that Gero might be able to deliver Stargate episodes that match the scale of the universe. Unlike these other shows, he has the experience to actually make it feel like a television series instead of a movie chopped up into chunks, which is becoming a rarity in the streaming landscape.

Unlike Other Sci-Fi Franchises, 'Stargate' Thrives on Television

The biggest advantage that the new Stargate will have over its contemporaries is that it's a franchise that thrives on television. Ironically, Stargate took the opposite path that Star Wars and Star Trek have embarked on in recent years. While Star Wars and Star Trek have mostly moved to television shows following their respective film franchises stalling out at the box office, Stargate found a new life on the small screen after its film incarnation failed to manifest a planned trilogy. Gero also has a leg up on the competition since the new Stargate is firmly set in the same universe as previous series, yet will feature a new story. This gives him a chance to hook older viewers who are fearful of a reboot wiping out what they love about the series, but also newer viewers who might not be as well versed in Stargate lore.

The new Stargate could also stand apart from previous series by exploring Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin's plans for a Stargate film trilogy. Those plans would have touched upon the influence that alien races had on Mayan culture, and even revealed that mythical creatures such as Bigfoot were actually aliens. While Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe would reveale that other mythological beings were aliens, there's still plenty of legends that could be reinterpreted with the Stargate lens. Martin Gero has the chance to deliver a fresh take on Stargate that'll actually feel fresh while staying true to the original's roots.
