The creator of Sailor Moon, Naoko Takeuchi, is back with new artwork depicting her iconic team of Sailor Senshi as cheerleaders. While fans might worry that so long away from the iconic heroines would make their return appear awkward, Takeuchi's artwork of the team is seriously impressive.
According to Sailor Moon Fan Network, to celebrate Keio University's Mita-kai Conference, Takeuchi drew a picture depicting Sailor Moon's 5 main Sailor Scouts as cheerleaders. While Sailor Mars, Venus, Mercury, and Jupiter are seen wearing traditional cheerleader outfits, Usagi herself has adorned the gaukran or male cheerleader outfit.
All the characters are seen wearing red and blue, matching the school's colors and the Mita-kai's 2025 slogan, "Under the blue, red, and blue!!"
Sailor Moon's Cheerleader Makeover Explained
Naoko Takeuchi's collaboration with Keio University makes sense, as the acclaimed artist earned her degree in chemistry from a school that would eventually be absorbed into the Keio University branch, making her an alumnus of the college.
The artwork is for Keio University's annual Mita-kai conference, a fun event where alumni gather to compete in competitions and socialize in support of their alma mater. The event occurred on October 19th, meaning it took a moment for Takeuchi's art to circulate.
In addition to the promotional image, the conference is offering merchandise depicting Takeuchi's artwork. A hoodie was on sale for around 40,000 Yen (around $250) according to the fansite.
Unfortunately for fans wanting this undeniably cool new piece of apparel, the Mita-kai conference already passed on October 3rd, meaning the only way to get the hoodies now is through the secondary market.
What Is The Status of Sailor Moon's Franchise?
Custom Image by Diana Acuña
Unfortunately, despite the intense popularity of Sailor Moon both in Japan and abroad, not much has been happening with the franchise lately.
The two-part Sailor Moon Cosmos was released in 2023. That movie featured a pretty conclusive ending, meaning it's unlikely to receive any direct sequels. After that, outside of a Sailor Moon Broadway musical, not much has been heard in terms of big releases.
Given this, Takeuchi's artwork depicting the Sailor Scouts is certainly welcome for fans of the franchise hungry for more.
Still, it's unlikely that Sailor Moon will remain dormant for long. The franchise isn't just popular, it's one of the world's most iconic anime/manga properties. Sailor Moon is still the standard that the best magical girl anime are judged against.
Given this, it will really just be a matter of time before Toei Animation returns to the world Naoko Takeuchi created. Until then, it's great to see the beloved mangaka return to Sailor Moon, even if it is with just a small bit of promotional art.
