Genshin Impact studio HoYoverse has been keeping busy with new games, and the latest reveal comes with a 30-minute gameplay trailer to show off all the details. Following Genshin Impact, HoYoverse released Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero and teased future titles like Petit Planet and Ananta. So far, the studio's efforts have been consistently successful, even while competing in an increasingly crowded market.
Last night, a YouTube video from HoYoverse revealed Varsapura, a new game focusing on a bureau called SEAL dealing with a spreading problem of "Mindrot." The gameplay demo video encompasses everything from the protagonist's interview at SEAL to some real-world combat experience, which looks fairly different from anything HoYoverse has done to date. A driving sequence in between showcases a large, modern city environment, pulling back a bit from the more fantastical settings of Genshin and Honkai.
Varsapura Gets Massive 31-Minute Gameplay Demo
A Content-Packed Reveal
The scope of Varsapura's reveal is surprisingly ambitious, giving fans more to chew on than previous reveals of upcoming HoYoverse games have generally offered. The first half of the video indicates a more robust RPG experience than previous HoYoverse works, with conversational options to use tactics like Deception and Persuasion that may generate mixed results.
The combat demo, meanwhile, establishes some stealth options that could minimize all-out brawling. In the final gameplay sequence, the protagonist is shown sneaking up on enemies in a hostile compound to hit them with surprise combos and even one-tap assassinations.
While Varsapura still boasts an anime art style, it also moves away from the cel-shaded look of Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. The comparatively subdued world is accompanied by more realistic lighting and a less colorful palette, suggesting a place alongside possible inspirations like Control.
Varsapura Looks Promising, But It Might Not Be Ready Soon
HoYoverse Has A Lot On Its Hands
Despite the extended reveal video, it might still be a while before Varsapura sees the light of day. The end of the trailer features a list of job openings for the title, and HoYoverse already has a lot in the works. Varsapura has clearly made a lot of development progress, but it might not yet be near the finish line.
Regardless, it's interesting to see HoYoverse continuing to attempt new styles and gameplay concepts. I already thought Honkai: Star Rail was a general step-up from Genshin Impact, and the combat opportunities in Varsapura look like the most interesting ones yet. If Varsapura is everything that the reveal trailer makes it out to be, it might be another hit for HoYoverse, at least among players with a tolerance for gacha games.
