DC Officially Confirms Volcana’s Design For Batman's New Appearance

Batman's new appearance uses quite a few underrated villains from DC Comics, with one of them being Volcana, and the character's unique design and story are central to the project. One of the most exciting elements of Batman's animated series is how they treat the hero's Rogues' Gallery. Sure, major characters like the Joker and Two-Face are nearly always present.

However, different from Batman's live-action movies, the animated shows have long episode orders, allowing DC to tap into a rich well of villains. That has also led to a few original creations, of which Harley Quinn is the most successful example. Like Harley, Volcana was created for an animated show, Superman: The Animated Series, and she returns in Batman's new TV show.

DC Has Revealed What Bat-Fam’s Volcana Looks Like

Bat-Fam, DC's new Bat-Family series on Prime Video, does a great job of mixing major villains from the comics and smaller characters. The series does feature Batman fighting the likes of Clayface, Killer Croc, and so on, but its central villain is a reformed character who looks very different from how DC fans know her.

Of course, I'm talking about Claire Selton, aka Volcana. In Bat-Fam, we learn through a flashback that Volcana fell into one of Ra's al Ghul's Lazarus Pits, being de-aged to become a child. After the ordeal, the character is no longer a villain, being reformed to live with Batman, Damian Wayne, and the rest of the show's Bat-Family at Wayne Manor.

Bruce Wayne essentially adopts the young Volcana, who develops a sibling bond with Damian throughout Bat-Fam's 10 episodes. The Prime Video series keeps Volcana's trademark red hair as part of her design. However, the character looks extremely different. Volcana is notably shorter, has fuller hair, and often wears regular clothes, though her red and black design remains for superhero adventures.

How Bat-Fam’s Volcana Compares To Other Versions Of The DC Villain?

When it comes to Volcana, the best comparison we can make is between the Bat-Fam and Superman: The Animated Series' versions of the character. In the latter, Volcana was an adult with longer red hair, more orange than the red seen in Bat-Fam. Her hair was also shaped like fire, and she sported a full-on super-suit.

Besides their different ages and costumes, the original animated version of Volcana had a more realistic design than Bat-Fam's. DC's new Batman TV show notably goes for cartoonish proportions and more distinct lines for its characters. It fits the series' more comedic direction, while the original Volcana felt more villainous and real. The new Batman show reinvents the character.
