There's a new character on Stranger Things Season 5 named Derek Turnbow.

And if you factor in when the Stranger Things show takes place, they're pretty much the same age.
The new season takes place in November 1987. The guy who turned into the MLB pitcher would've been 9 years old then. While it's not specifically stated in the show, that seems like a ballpark age for the fictional Derek, too.
Did someone writing the script have a strong Brewers fandom? It sure seems possible.
The real-life Turnbow was a fifth-round pick by the Phillies in the 1997 MLB Draft out of Franklin High School in Tennessee.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHe made his MLB debut in 2000 with the Angels. He didn't get back to the majors in 2001 or 2002, returning in 2003-04 to pitch in parts of two more campaigns in Anaheim.
Turnbow joined the Brewers in 2005 and put up a 1.74 ERA in that first season.
He made his only All-Star Game in 2006 as part of the craziest tale of two halves season ever. He finished the year with a 6.87 ERA. But his ERA at the end of June had been 3.28, and he was coming off such a great season prior that he got noticed.
Turnbow pitched two more seasons with the Brewers.
He ended with a 4.30 ERA with 265 strikeouts and 168 walks in 257.2 innings pitched.
