Aiding the animated sequel in its quest to destroy records is China, a country that has been visibly cold on Hollywood movies in the last five years. As things stand, however, Zootopia 2 has a chance of beating Avengers: Endgame in the Middle Kingdom, which isn't something that anybody could've seen coming. The film has already passed the $100 million mark at the worldwide box office, before entering its first weekend of release, when revenue is expected to skyrocket even further. Zootopia 2 has also performed the much-needed job of turning things around for Disney after what has been a particularly bittersweet year.
Although the Mouse House is responsible for the only Hollywood movie to have crossed the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office this year — the Lilo & Stitch remake — it also delivered a handful of duds. Movies such as Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, Snow White, Elio, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Tron: Ares have all underperformed to varying degrees. Zootopia 2 will pave the way for Avatar: Fire and Ash, which will presumably continue the positive momentum and deliver results worthy of its predecessors. Here's the running breakdown for the animated sequel: Zootopia 2 has grossed around $80 million in China, and another $80 million at the domestic box office.
The movie is currently eying around $160 million in its extended domestic debut, and as high as $200 million across five days in China. Adding in the revenue from other territories, the movie could gross as much as $550 million globally by Sunday. This would put it on the top 10 list of the biggest openings in cinema history, ahead of films such as Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi ($450 million), Captain Marvel ($456 million), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 ($483 million). The list is topped by Endgame, which grossed $1.2 billion in its global debut back in 2019.
2025 Has Been an Extraordinary Year for Animation
Released nearly a decade after the first Zootopia, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide, the sequel brings back lead voice actors Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, and is produced on a reported budget of $150 million. The movie is currently sitting at a 92% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, which is marginally lower than the near-perfect 98% that the original continues to hold. This has been an extraordinary year for animation so far, with Ne Zha 2 becoming the first animated movie in history to cross the $2 billion mark at the global box office, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle becoming the highest-grossing anime title of all time, and KPop Demon Hunters becoming the biggest original hit in Netflix's history. You can watch Zootopia 2 in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
