With Thanksgiving celebrations occurring across College Park — and, aside from the women’s basketball team, not a lot of sports going on — we took time to check in on the family of perhaps the University of Maryland’s most influential character.
University president Darryll Pines’ son Donovan, a professional soccer player, had been playing for Barnsley in the English second division for two years, but in August, he joined Grazer AK 1902, a top-division team in Austria. He has played over 1,000 minutes so far for the team, starting all but two league matches.

But in their match away to second-placed SK Rapid Vienna Sunday, Grazer engineered an improbable, 2-1 upset victory. Pines played every minute in the heart of the defense, recovering the ball seven times and recording 12 clearances to help take the team off the bottom of the table.
Pines and Grazer will next be in action against last-place team Blau-Weiß Linz Saturday. That game could be crucial in pushing either side away from relegation.
