Summary

  • Collider's Steve Weintraub talks with Landman stars Jacob Lofland, Paulina Chávez, and Michelle Randolph for Season 2.
  • The cast discusses deeper family dynamics and more chaos for the Paramount+ series.
  • Randolph shares an exciting tease for Scream 7.

With Taylor Sheridan's Landman back on Paramount+ for Season 2, Collider's Steve Weintraub had the opportunity to sit and chat with some of the stars behind the series. After Season 1's shocking finale left M-Tex Oil in the hands of Cami Miller (Demi Moore), and Billy Bob Thornton's Tommy Norris found himself in a less-than-ideal situation with Galino (Andy Garcia) and the cartel, Jacob Lofland, Paulina Chávez, and Michelle Randolph tease even more chaos to come.

In this interview, the trio discusses why they'd love a Sheridan universe crossover with Special Ops: Lioness, what fans can expect in Season 2, and why it's so special to be able to tell real-life stories, inspired by Landman co-creator Christian Wallace's podcast, Boomtown. Randolph, who's joined the cast of Kevin Williamson's Scream 7, also gives a fun tease for fans of the franchise.

Check out the full conversation in the video above, or you can read the transcript below. Landman Season 2 also stars Sam Elliott, Ali Larter, Kayla Wallace, Colm Feore, and James Jordan.

'Scream 7' Will Be Full of Nostalgia for Fans

With the original franchise creator, Kevin Williamson, at the helm, Michelle Randolph promises it won't disappoint.

COLLIDER: Michelle, I have to start with you. I’m a big fan of the Scream series. I'm just going to go right in and say, what the hell can you tease about the new Scream movie and getting directed by Kevin Williamson?

MICHELLE RANDOLPH: Well, the fact that Kevin Williamson directed is incredible because he created the Scream franchise, and so there are a lot of callbacks to the original. I can't say much else, but people will love it. It was so much fun to work on.

PAULINA CHÁVEZ: The trailer is incredible. Oh my God.

JACOB LOFLAND: It's great.

CHÁVEZ: You have really great screams.

RANDOLPH: Thank you!

Hands Down, ‘Landman’ Wants To Team Up With This Taylor Sheridan Series

It seems to be unanimous.

For all three of you, if you guys could crossover with another Taylor Sheridan show besides 1923, what show would you like to crossover with?

LOFLAND: Lioness.

CHÁVEZ: Immediately Lioness.

LOFLAND: Hands down.

It's funny, the rest of your cast has all said the same thing. Lioness.

RANDOLPH: I think it’s because of James Jordan.

LOFLAND: James Jordan. We want to stay in it.

CHÁVEZ: Exactly. He's a delight.

RANDOLPH: Yeah, and he's on both, and they kind of crossover our shooting. Like, right when we are leaving, they're coming. So it's like, “Ah, wait!”

LOFLAND: And to see his excitement coming from it and getting to work with him, it's infectious. We know it's so much fun. That would be the one.

'Landman' Wouldn't Exist Without the Real People Behind These Stories

"In our lifetimes, we've never had a show like this."

After the success of the first season, I would guess a lot of people in the oil industry or people who watch the show want to come up to you and talk about it, especially oil industry people, and when you're filming in Texas. What’s been the thing that everyone wants to talk about, or is it just to say, “I'm a fan of the show?”

LOFLAND: The first thing about that is the pipe wrench not being right, which we've heard and heard and heard and heard a thousand times. Whatever. We're good on that. Other than that, everyone is very excited, and it's awesome to get to see their interest and their light and their respect for someone finally showing this world that's never been talked about in our generation. In our lifetimes, we've never had a show like this. I think Dallas would have been the last one, and it wasn't an upstairs-downstairs thing like we're doing. It was strictly just the business side. So, getting to open the door and pull the curtain back for people to see what this industry is, for better or worse, I think that means a lot and shows the world what it actually takes to turn. And we wouldn't be here without this industry.

What about you guys?

RANDOLPH: I surprisingly don't get asked about the oil industry a lot on the show. But on the podcast, Boomtown, by Christian Wallace, I learned a lot about the oil industry when I was going into shooting because I didn't have all the scripts yet. So I thought, “Does my character eventually get involved in the business?”

LOFLAND: Hopefully. We’ve still got time.

CHÁVEZ: Maybe! Oh my gosh, could you imagine?

RANDOLPH: I’ll be a landwoman.

CHÁVEZ: I feel like, for me, I get a lot of people who are from El Paso who have worked in the oil industry, and I'm from El Paso, so it's super cool. But also, every time we would go out as a group, everybody would stop Jacob, and it would always be so fun to hear their stories in the industry. I think it's just so cool that their voices are being heard through Landman. It's their stories.

LOFLAND: And most of them are generational. They really are. This is not a business that’s one in, one off. It's not working at Target. These people devote their lives to it, and their children devote their lives to it. It really is a generational business.

'Landman' Season 2 Brings Even "More Chaos"

"We were also just as invested in the storyline as y'all are going to be."

What do you guys want to tease about Season 2?

LOFLAND: Nothing. [Laughs]

RANDOLPH: We get a deeper look into the family dynamics across the board. More chaos.

CHÁVEZ: I don't want to share anything because, receiving this script this season, we didn't get all 10 episodes at once like we did first season. We were also just as invested in the storyline as y'all are going to be, and so I want y'all to just be able to go in blind, just like we did, and get everything. Your reactions are going to be great. I don't want to spoil anything because I'm so excited to watch it.

LOFLAND: Christmas is always better when the presents are wrapped.

CHÁVEZ: Yeah. Exactly.

You guys have now made two seasons. For each of you, which scene or sequence ended up being a real challenging one to film for whatever reason? Maybe emotional or camera moves.

LOFLAND: Personally, falling off a rig last season. I'll just go ahead and take that one first.

RANDOLPH: It's hard to select one singular one because I feel like all of my scenes were challenging in different ways, across the board. I think I had a hard time at first trying to figure out the comedy and mixing that in with the drama of the show, and Ainsley and Angela are the comedic relief in a lot of ways. So I think Season 2, I ended up having a lot more fun with that than in Season 1. It was very intimidating because I didn't really know the tone of the show yet. So, yeah, Season 2, I felt like we could really just run straight into the comedy.

CHÁVEZ: All of the first season was very emotional for me, and so that was a very interesting thing to be able to tap in and out of. Also, learning to let it go was very challenging, but luckily, I'm working with an amazing group of people, cast and crew. Jacob and I always found moments to just laugh in between takes. This season, there are a few. There’s a few where I would call Jacob and be like, “What?” [Laughs]

LOFLAND: Hey, we made it through.

CHÁVEZ: But we made it through them, and it was so fun to do it on the day with people that we love creating with.

Landman Season 2 is streaming on Paramount+ now. New episodes premiere every Sunday.
