The 2025 Major League Baseball offseason is really starting to heat up.
We should start to see fireworks soon as well. The deadline for teams to protect prospects from the Rule 5 Draft passed on Tuesday, with the non-tender deadline coming shortly after on Friday. To sum up, that's the deadline for clubs to decide whether to tender contracts to players who are arbitration-eligible or pre-arbitration.
Clubs have to make the call on which players they have team control over they want to come back, and which ones they want to let walk to free agency.
The deadline typically leads to an influx of players around the league entering the open market and potentially some deals are made around the league. The deadline in itself is interesting, but it also led to an intriguing comment from Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, who spoke to reporters on Thursday and insinuated there could be trades on the way.
..."We know what we intend to do and we're having conversations at the same time with clubs," Cashman said as seen in a video clip shared by SNY on X. "So, we may be doing business before the tender. Whether we cut deals, maybe making trades, and yeah, we'll have non-tenders as well."
If you're a Yankees fan, these types of comments from Cashman should have your attention. Cashman didn't give specifics, but it's clear that New York is looking around the market right now.
