When it was announced that Quentin Tarantino was going to follow up his two biggest hits — Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained — with another Western that would be shot on 65mm film and probably have an interval, nobody would've expected him to make something like The Hateful Eight. Instead of the sprawling adventure that initial information suggested, The Hateful Eight was essentially a locked-room mystery that Agatha Christie would've been proud of. The movie followed a host of morally questionable characters, all armed to the teeth, trapped in a haberdashery during a blizzard. When they suddenly start dropping dead, tensions arise. The Hateful Eight remains an underrated entry on Tarantino's resume, and the movie will get a new opportunity to appeal to more fans when it debuts on the Paramount+ streaming service on December 1.

The Hateful Eight featured Tarantino veterans such as Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth, and Walton Goggins, with Jennifer Jason Leigh in an Academy Award-nominated performance as the memorable murderer Daisy Domergue. Produced on a reported budget of around $60 million, the movie grossed $160 million at the worldwide box office, underperforming quite drastically stateside with just over $50 million. This was a major downgrade for Tarantino, who was coming off the $370 million-grossing Inglourious Basterds and the $400 million-plus hit Django Unchained. Both those movies were also major Oscar players, but The Hateful Eight won only one Academy Award, for the legendary Ennio Morricone's original score.

Quentin Tarantino Is in No Hurry to Make His Final Film

The movie was also plagued by poor luck, with its script being leaked online prior to production, and criticism for its perceived misogyny and racism following its release. The Hateful Eight now holds a "certified fresh" 74% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "The Hateful Eight offers another well-aimed round from Quentin Tarantino's signature blend of action, humor, and over-the-top violence — all while demonstrating an even stronger grip on his filmmaking craft." Having moved to Israel, Tarantino now seems to be doing everything in his power not to direct his final feature film — he's working on books, plays, writing scripts for others, and even long-form storytelling.
