If you were bored of Westeros, too bad — you're getting more of it. During a recent appearance at the Iceland Noir convention, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R. R. Martin revealed that HBO is indeed developing sequels to Game of Thrones, not just prequels. For fans who thought the abandoned Jon Snow series was the end of all post-Thrones possibilities, this is a massive shift.

According to Martin, HBO currently has “five or six” spinoff projects in development, most of them prequels — but crucially, “there are some sequels.” This marks the first time he has explicitly said that HBO is exploring more stories set after the events of the Emmy-winning series. And the possibilities are enormous.

For years, the only sequel fans knew about was the Jon Snow show, which would’ve seen Kit Harington return to the role as Jon navigated life beyond the Wall. Though reports suggested it was shelved, Martin’s latest comments reopen the door — and then some.

Because he said sequels, plural.

Which raises a big question: what other post-Thrones stories could HBO tell? One popular theory — floated by the Spanish fansite Los Siete Reinos, which recorded Martin’s comments — is an Arya Stark sequel. It makes perfect sense. Arya sailed west of Westeros in the finale, making her the only major character positioned for an entirely unexplored journey. And Maisie Williams has openly said she would return if the story was right.

There’s also a chance HBO could gamble on a sequel that doesn’t rely on legacy characters, following new figures navigating Westeros after Bran Stark becomes king. But given how valuable the original cast remains in pop culture, that feels less likely.

What Other 'Game of Thrones' Shows Are There?

While the idea of sequels has understandably become the headline, Martin emphasized that HBO is still deep into developing multiple prequels alongside the two that have already reached screens:

  • House of the Dragon (renewed and returning in 2026)
  • A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight (premiering January 18)

Other prequels — some previously announced, others rumored — remain at various stages of development:

  • Nymeria and the 10,000 Ships
  • The Sea Snake, focused on Corlys Velaryon
  • Aegon the Conqueror (series and potential movie)
  • Animated series set in Yi Ti
  • The shelved-but-famous Blood Moon pilot starring Naomi Watts
  • Projects set in Braavos and Flea Bottom

Until then, fans can look toward the next guaranteed stop on the Westerosi calendar: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, premiering January 18, followed by House of the Dragon Season 3 in summer 2026.
