It: Welcome To Derry - The Hanlon Family's Tragic Story Intensifies

The Hanlon family has a tragic history, but Welcome to Derry might make it even worse with one book change that will also make a tragedy even sadder.

It continues to terrorize the characters of the prequel series It: Welcome to Derry, and episode 4 sets up even more tragedies for the Hanlon family. Stephen King’s 1986 novel It is one of his best and most popular works, and it has been adapted into a two-part miniseries and a two-part movie.

The latest addition to the world of It is the TV show Welcome to Derry, a prequel to Andy Muschietti’s It movies. As such, Welcome to Derry is set in 1962, and follows a new group of kids and adults who come across the terrifying shapeshifting creature known as “It.”

So far, Welcome to Derry has introduced new and horrifying shapes of It, and in its fourth episode, one of these set up even more tragedy for the Hanlon family, and thus, one of the Losers, Mike Hanlon.

Welcome to Derry features some characters seen in the movies, such as pharmacist Norbert Keene, and there are some directly connected to the Losers Club. Such is the case for the Hanlon family, with young Will being the father of Mike Hanlon, the only one of the Losers who stays in Derry.

After that night at the cemetery in Welcome to Derry episode 3, Will was convinced of the existence of It, but he hadn't been directly targeted by it until episode 4. While fishing with his father, Leroy, Will is attacked by It while Leroy briefly goes to the car.

Will is pulled into the water by It in the shape of a burned Leroy with demonic yellow eyes. Will later tells Leroy this is the physical representation of one of his fears, as he has nightmares of his dad being involved in a plane crash and burning. While this is Will's fear, Welcome to Derry might be preparing a big tragedy for the Hanlons.

Episode 4 of Welcome to Derry also confirmed the appearance of the Black Spot, a bar where black soldiers used to relax and hang out. In the novel, The Black Spot is burned down by the Main Legion of White Decency, but Hallorann, thanks to his “shine”, manages to escape and save others, among them Mike’s father.

In the context of Welcome to Derry, Hallorann would be saving Leroy, Mike’s grandfather, but the show could make part of Will’s nightmare a reality. Leroy could be badly injured in the Black Spot fire (which is briefly shown in the Welcome to Derry mid-season trailer), making it one of the cruelest ways It has haunted one of its victims.

It's Words To Young Will Hanlon Come True In The Movies

It’s to be seen if Will’s nightmare will be brought to life by It, but what’s for sure is that It’s words to Will come true years later. In the form of a burned Leroy, It tells Will that he “will burn too”, which might not mean anything to those unfamiliar with Muschietti’s movies.

The first It movie established a big change in Mike Hanlon’s story, as his parents, Will and Jessica, die when their apartment building burns down, and they are trapped in it. Mike was raised by Leroy, at his farm, and It uses his traumatic past to terrorize him. The Hanlons’ story is tragic, and it might get worse in Welcome to Derry.
