For a medium as diverse and wide-spanning as Anime, it can be difficult ranking the best anime series of all time. Looking at the wide range of metrics fans use to judge the quality of any individual anime makes the ranking even tougher.
Though no metric is necessarily wrong, ultimately, things such as animation quality, industry impact, direction, atmosphere, and consistency can quantify how to rank each anime. Unfortunately, that last point disqualifies some notable fan favorites.
Though Naruto and Bleach are both incredible series, their abundance of poor filler eliminates them from ranking. It also wouldn't be fair to count any currently ongoing series. While One Piece, Spy x Family, Ranking of Kings, and Kaguya-Sama are all masterpieces in their own right, it's impossible to rank them without knowing their endings.

Lupin the Third is one of the most important anime and manga franchises of all time. The manga series is incredibly influential to this day, while the anime helped launch the career of Hayao Miyazaki.
Despite the original anime's legendary status, however, it is 2012's The Woman Called Fujiko Mine that truly steals the crown of best Lupin series.
Taking Monkey Punch's classic characters and revealing their origin stories, The Woman Called Fujiko Mine provides a fascinating look at some of Japan's most important pop-culture heroes.
In particular, the series goes into great depth analyzing its title heroine. Fujio is a fascinating character in this series, and her story as portrayed in The Woman Called Fujiko Mine is horrific and thrilling in equal measure.

Few anime made directly in the wake of Neon Genesis Evangelion offered as much to the mech genre as Studio Bones' RahXephon.
With its unique mech designs, mind-bending plot, and interesting cast, RahXephon feels similar to Evangelion while still adding its own unique twists and turns to the formula.
While RahXephon may not be as well-remembered as its contemporaries, that says more about the crowded market than it does about this unique mech anime that offers a fun and underrated alternative to the genre's most famous stories.

No anime based on a collectible toy franchise has any right to be half as good as the Digimon anime has been. Despite being created in an era filled to bursting with anime series about collectible monsters, Digimon managed to stand out from the pack with its in-depth characters and sharp writing.
After more than twenty years, however, no Digimon series has been able to top the sheer psychological depths of Digimon Tamers.
Tamers is a wildly dark children's anime that goes places even anime for adults rarely go. Themes of dealing with depression, anxiety, and social isolation are given surprising nuance. These deep themes, combined with some solid action, are enough to make Digimon Tamers truly unforgettable.

Yu Yu Hakusho is a series that is just relentlessly cool. Based on the manga by Yoshihiro Togashi, Yu Yu Hakusho was always an anime that felt fresh despite all the classic shonen tropes it riffs on.
Togashi truly had something special with the series, and Studio Pierrot did an admirable job bringing it to life.
Yu Yu Hakusho still has one of anime's best tournament arcs ever, and that has made it a huge influence on modern series. Naruto, Bleach, and Jujutsu Kaisen can all trace important elements of their world and characters to Togashi's series, proving that Togashi's work has serious staying power.

Anime really can be about anything, and few series prove that better than Madhouse's Orb: On the Movements of the Earth.
Based on the manga by Uoto, Orb is a historical fiction series about the brave heretics who fought against an oppressive church doctrine that declared Heliocentrism as blasphemy of the highest order.
Achingly human with tragedy hiding around every corner, Orb is a beautiful exploration of truth and why it matters. While each of the series' four main characters differ in key ways, they are all on a search for knowledge regardless of the cost.
The lengths these characters go to fight dogma are heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time, all leading to a finale that will leave fans in tears.

Azumanga Daioh is an anime series that follows the daily lives of six high school girls and their teachers, exploring their unique personalities and humorous antics. Based on Kiyohiko Azuma's manga, the show delves into themes of friendship and adolescence, creating a slice-of-life narrative enriched with wit and charm. The series captures the essence of high school experiences with a blend of relatable moments and whimsical humor.
Seasons 1 Genres Animation, Comedy, Fantasy Main Genre Animation Powered bySlice-of-life is an important genre in anime, and few have captured the genre's appeal quite like Azumanga Daioh. Ostensibly a comedy, the series follows six high school girls over the course of three years. While hijinks and antics are an important part of the series, what really makes Azumanga Daioh so foundational is just how cozy it is.
The main cast are distinct characters who bounce off each other in fun ways. The result is a series that makes viewers feel like they're hanging out with friends.
Unfortunately, if Azumanga Daioh has one central flaw, it's the lone male character, the teacher Mr. Kimura. The jokes about him being attracted to high school girls were already not great when the anime and manga first released, but have only grown more uncomfortable as the years go on. Still, it speaks to Azumanga Daioh's quality that Mr. Kimura's presence is a flaw many fans are more than willing to overlook.

After a decade, Attack On Titan's anime wrapped up and cemented the series' status as an all-time great. The anime series starts with an undeniable sense of mystery, as the wild premise automatically invites so many questions.
Though anime starting with a series of overarching large questions is quite common, it's rare to see all those mysteries answered in such a thorough and satisfying manner as they are in Attack On Titan. That might well be at the base of the Attack On Titan manga, but the anime also helps clarify a few points that actually enhance the overall experience.
Attack On Titan may also rank among the 2010s' most influential anime. Shonen has always had a darker undercurrent to it, especially with creators like Go Nagai. However, dark shonen definitely saw a renaissance after the runaway success of Attack On Titan. Mega-hit manga and anime like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man certainly owe a debt of gratitude to Attack On Titan.

Kyoto Animation is one of the most beloved anime studios in the world, and with visual masterpieces like Violet Evergarden, it's easy to see why. Violet Evergarden tells a rather simple story about a child soldier attempting to reclaim her identity after the end of the war and the loss of the only person who cared about her.
The titular heroine ends up working as an Auto-Memory Doll, someone who transcribes letters. Through this straightforward premise, the series tackles a variety of emotional topics with its mostly episodic structure.
For all of the strengths of Violet Evergarden's story, though, it's the look and sound of the series that earns it such high marks. Despite the grounded premise, Violet Evergarden is nothing short of decadent with its art style and music. The animation is fluid and captures small movements well, while the score is swelling, capturing every scene's emotions perfectly. The result is one of the best-animated anime series of all time.

On the exact opposite end of the Kyoto Animation spectrum from Violet Evergarden is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Haruhi became infamous in the late 2000s and early 2010s for absolutely dominating anime fandom, and though some fans may have gone overboard, the series and its titular star live up to the hype. One of the most powerful anime characters ever, Haruhi is an incredibly compelling character.
More than just one interesting lead, though, Haruhi is a bold and ambitious show. The events are told out of order, there are 8 episodes that basically just repeat themselves, and the overall tone is just wild. While fans may grumble about the infamous Endless Eight, it's still a move that feels suitably Haruhi.

Running from 1984 to 1987, Toei Animation's Fist of the North Star is a series whose influence is wide-reaching. Fist of the North Star is about a martial artist named Kenshiro who fights against the warlords and bandits who have risen in the wake of a nuclear apocalypse.
Perhaps the definitive anime of the 1980s, Fist of the North Star ushered in a new era of gritty and violent anime that defined the medium for more than a decade.
The series' legacy can still be felt today, as it's not only been referenced by countless other anime and manga, it also served as an inspiration for masterpieces like Berserk and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. As if its legacy wasn't enough, Fist of the North Star is just a blood-pumping good time even outside its historical context.

This list is TRASH! No offense! But no one piece, no Yu Yu hakusho , no InuYasha , no Samurai Champloo ,
G Gundam , No Conan case closed! , YOU HAD THE NERVE TO ADD PUTO! PLUTO WAS SO BORING!!! NONE OF THE NEW ANIME YOU ADD SHOULD BE LISTED. THERE ARE AT LEAST 20 BETTER THAN THOSE THAT DIDNT MAKE THIS LIST. Lupon the 3rd, Big O, Outlaw star, Gundam Wing! DBZ IS NUMBER 1!. AND POKÉMON IS TOP 10. THESE STARED IT ALL FOR AMERICANS. Sword art online, My Hero, Jujutsu Kaisen, and solo Leveling are better than every new anime you listed. Can't forget Frieren I could go all night but don't know if anyone will read this!!
2024-09-09 04:54:19 Upvote 20 Downvote Reply 5 CopyThe writer said One Piece wouldn't be included because, as of now, it doesn't have an ending. I cannot justify Yu Yu Hakusho nor Inuyasha, but Samurai Champloo is literally on the list, maybe you just missed it.
I once again cannot speak for G Gundam nor Conan Case Closed cause I haven't watched them, but this list is based on what the author of it thinks, not some universal objective truth because such a thing doesn't exist.
I haven't watched Pluto yet, but not all anime is boring to the same people. I myself found Inuyasha boring because it just wasn't my thing and I didn't particularly care much about the characters, while you and many more people think it deserves to be on the list.
DBZ isn't number one because, while it may have had a big impact back in the day, it's just cliche and basic nowadays, and the same goes for the Pokemon anime. The impact these anime had on society is not a point of consideration this list has, as it only takes into account the impact on the industry.
I also think the phrase “These started it all for Americans” is very insensitive, considering anime is a Japanese production, and can't and shouldn't be putting the USA over it. Why would a list talking specifically about Japanese animation give a damn about the cultural impact it had on the United States? As seen with the inclusion of the anime Penguindrum and the reasons detailed in this list, USA is not taken into consideration (and it shouldn't!).
Sword Art Online is literally talked about like the biggest trash anime, Boku No Hero Academia is praiseworthy, yes, but not to the level of some of these anime not to mention its fall from grace at the end, Jujutsu Kaisen is not included because, once again, it's not finished (this is an anime list, not a manga list) and for Solo Leveling I can't speak cause I haven't seen it. Frieren also lacks an ending as far as I'm aware.
This comment is meant without malice, but yours clearly was, so please don't be meant to the writer for this

2024-12-28 22:00:23 Upvote Downvote Reply CopyThe fact that Yu Yu Hakusho isn't on the list invalidates the entire list. There would be no Hunter X Hunter without it. Yu Yu Hakusho redefined fighting animes. Inuyasha is one of the best selling series in all of Japan and is an anime staple. Sailor Moon not being on the list is also shocking. Space Dandy but not Samurai Champloo? The exclusion of Pokemon which is the most popular singular entertainment entitey? Not including One piece is also wild. This list makes absolutely no sense because it lacks series that redefined the entirety of anime. I didn't expect my personal favorite which is Rurouni Kenshin to be on the list but wow was there a lot of genre defining anime that weren't even mentioned. This person clearly didn't grow up watching Toonami and hasn't done a deep enough dive into anime to be making this list.
2024-09-10 01:46:14 Upvote 3 Downvote Reply 4 CopyWhile I agree Yu Yu Hakusho should be in the list, I also don't think the list lack validity. The writer mentioned their reasons for including or excluding anime from the list, and cultural or societal impact was not mentioned, meaning that an anime being a big influence on the anime community is not taking into account, while it being a big influence on the industry is. And yes, maybe this person did not, in fact, grow up watching Toonami. I didn't grow up watching Toonami. I didn't even know what it was until recently. Because I don't live in the United States, and maybe neither does this person. I've seen someone drop a comment along the same line, and I think the USA should let go of the belief that they are the center of the world, because many things that affect them do not affect others countries
While I do agree Yu Yu Hakusho should be on the list, I also agree with what's already in it and I'm intrigued by those anime I don't know, but at the end of the day it's the writer's opinion, which is not going to be shared by everyone
2024-12-28 22:09:45 Upvote Downvote Reply CopyYu Yu Hakusho isn't as good as hxh and having 2 togashi works would be a bit derivative. Also samurai champloo and gundam are literally on the list.

2025-01-06 19:48:20 Upvote Downvote Reply CopyI might understand that whoever wrote this was trying to be objective but... c'mon. There's no way the Big Three wouldn't be at least near the top of the list. And no reason AoT should be so low. Scott Pilgrim's in it and not One Piece? Terrible.
2024-10-20 12:31:13 Upvote 3 Downvote Reply 1 CopyThe writer said Naruto and Bleach were out because of a lack of consistency (and probably quality as well, look up some video essays about them on YouTube and you might see what are some of the flaws both anime have) and the writer also said that unfinished anime would not be counted in this list, that's why One Piece is also amiss. Hope this helps! This comment is said without malice and to clarify on things you might've missed from reading only the list and not the introduction.
2024-12-28 21:58:04 Upvote Downvote Reply CopyI don't like to be negative about other people's opinions, but as someone who's watched nothing but anime for 23 years, this list is pretty bad. Aside leaving out some of the more amazing shows and including ones that have no business on an "all-time" list, the rank order is pretty misplaced.
