Stunning Zelda: Ocarina Of Time "Next-Gen" Remake Is All I've Ever Wanted

A jaw-dropping fan remake of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in Unreal Engine 5 has gamers stunned, and we can see why.

There are video games, and then there are video games. Video games are great, but video games are genre-defining masterpieces. It should come as little surprise that The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time falls into the latter camp.

Despite releasing nearly 30 years ago now, Ocarina Of Time remains one of the most beloved video games of all time. You would think, then, that we're surely due a remake on Nintendo Switch 2.

Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Stuns In Unreal Engine 5

So beautiful I could weep

Link walks through a forest

While there are no plans to officially remake Ocarina Of Time, at least for the moment, there's one project that's quietly been going on in the background for years now. And it looks more impressive every time I see it.

YouTuber CryZENx has been working on an Unreal Engine remake of the 1998 classic for around six years now, to the extent there are even playable demos available. How Nintendo hasn't shut this one down yet is beyond me, but I'm glad the project has been able to continue. Watching it evolve over the years alongside Unreal Engine has been quite something.

Their most recent video, above, is focused on the Lake Hylia area, and shows off some truly stunning water effects. The level of detail is nothing short of astounding, to the point that I'm willing to overlook that what I always assumed to be a freshwater lake appears to be filled with coral reefs. It's hard to be pedantic when it's this gorgeous.

Will Nintendo Ever Remake Ocarina Of Time?

All we can do is hope

Whether Nintendo officially remasters Ocarina Of Time remains to be seen, but I wouldn't hold my breath. We did get an excellent 3DS remake back in 2011 in the form of The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time 3D. That re-release is, to me, probably still the definitive way to play the classic game.

If Nintendo would just bring that over to the Switch 2 with a bump in resolution, I'd be happy enough. For now, we have to be content with what CryZENx is working on, watching from a distance without ever getting to play. Actually, when I put it like that, it's kind of a bummer, isn't it?

A real remake of The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time might not be impossible, however. With a new LEGO set around the corner and a movie in development, there's a small chance Nintendo could return to its most popular adventure for maximum bucks. We'll just have to wait and see.
