David Tennant is the latest Doctor Who alum to join Time, the hit crime drama series. Debuting in June 2021 from creator Jimmy McGovern, the BBC One anthology follows the lives of inmates and staff in a young offenders' institution. It won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Mini-Series, featuring several familiar faces in leading and supporting roles.
In its debut year, Time starred Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean and Adolescence star Stephen Graham. For its second installment, which is co-written by McGovern and Helen Black, with Andrea Harkin directing all three episodes, the anthology welcomed Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), Tamara Lawrance (Get Millie Black), and former Doctor Who headliner Jodie Whittaker.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tennant is joining Time season 3. The two-time BAFTA nominee will star alongside Siobhan Finneran, who reprises her role as Marie-Louise O'Dell, the prison chaplain, from the first two seasons of the anthology. Finneran is likewise a BAFTA nominee for her supporting role as Clare Cartwright in the acclaimed drama Happy Valley.

The upcoming episodes will see Marie-Louise, the prison chaplain, at a moment of losing her faith while she's at the young offenders’ institution. Per the official plot synopsis, she clashes with Prison Officer Bailey (played by Tennant) after a tragic incident. Bailey, a veteran in his job, has his own crisis to face. He knows more about the event than he'd care to admit. As his guilt increases, the question becomes whether Bailey will reveal the truth before it consumes him completely.
The synopsis also reveals that two teenagers, Peter and James, are struggling to get through the first weeks and months of their incarceration. James will have to examine whether he can ever face his parents, who are broken, after an unforgivable act of violence. Peter, for his part, has to ask himself whether he'll tell the truth about the death of an innocent man or choose family loyalty instead.
Reacting to the news, series creator McGovern praised Finneran’s return, Tennant as lead, and Paul Whittington as director, calling the project “wonderful.” ” Andrew Morrissey, executive producer for BBC Studios Fiction, echoes those sentiments and reflects on the show's evolution. Their quotes are below:
McGovern: “Siobhan Finneran is back! And we’ve got a wonderful leading man in David Tennant. And a brilliant director in Paul Whittington. I think it’s going to be wonderful.”
Morrissey: “It is a privilege to be making a third series of Time with such a fantastic team. We are excited to introduce the audience to a whole new part of the prison system. Once we started the research, we knew there were stories that demanded to be told.”
Tennant, who is beloved for his memorable performance as the Tenth Doctor, has other TV projects coming up. He is attached to the drama Hide, in addition to reprising his roles for Rivals season 2 and the Good Omens finale on Prime Video. Time is only the latest high-profile title for the veteran performer who seamlessly moves from lighthearted to darker fare.
