Konami's iconic horror franchise is finally making its way back to the big screen with Return to Silent Hill, which ScreenRant has the exclusive first trailer for. The film serves specifically as an adaptation of the 2001 sequel game, with its story centering on James Sunderland, a man grieving the death of his wife who gets a letter from her seemingly indicating she's alive in the titular town. As he heads to find her, though, James is instead greeted by terrifying monsters and a fog-bathed town with a mysterious past.

With a few months left until it hits theaters on January 23, ScreenRant is proud to exclusively debut the first official Return to Silent Hill trailer. The video introduces Jeremy Irvine's James in the midst of his grief as he ventures to the eponymous town to find Mary, only to become wrapped up in its various mysteries, including confronting a few others trapped in the town, and multiple monsters, namely that of Pyramid Head. Check out the trailer below:

Much like the first time the Konami franchise made the leap to live-action, Return to Silent Hill is being helmed by Christophe Gans, working on a script he co-wrote with Sandra Vo-Anh and Will Schneider, and his passion for the material continues to be felt. From once again bringing back iconic game composer Akira Yamaoka to recreating multiple iconic scenes directly, namely the bathroom mirror scene and James' encounter with a knife-wielding Angela.

However, much like with his first time out, the Return to Silent Hill trailer does seem to point to a few changes being made from its universally acclaimed source material. For starters, Maria's mention of the town having gotten "sick" at some point in the past is a change to the area's backstory, which has changed numerous times in the games, but generally revolves around the cult known as The Order, who inadvertently opened the door to what's colloquially known as the Otherworld, with their killing of Alessa and attempts to have her birth their god.

While it's not entirely clear yet why Gans and his team have made this tweak to Silent Hill's origins, there are a few narrative reasons why it could fit their adaptation of the second game. The most notable is that one of the story's key themes is James' grief and guilt made manifest over Mary's terminal illness and death, and as such, by explaining that the town was similarly affected by a widespread illness of some kind could help amplify the tension and mystery as James encounters various creatures.

The Silent Hill 2 Remake has many obvious changes from the original, but even veteran players might have missed out on some of the biggest changes.

In spite of its apparent changes, though, Return to Silent Hill looks to be offering a very faithful adaptation of its source material. One of Pyramid Head's most iconic scenes looks to be getting the stylized Gans treatment, while the team look to have borrowed from both Masashi Tsuboyama's original and Bloober Team's remake for some of its other creature designs and set pieces. With Gans also having always expressed his desire to adapt Silent Hill 2 properly, one can hope that love carried over into his best take on the horror franchise yet.
