Ryan Murphy's flagship network TV show has its work cut out for it after it controversially killed Bobby Nash in a random season 8 episode. While 9-1-1 is technically an ensemble series, there's no denying that Peter Krause was its true leading man until his departure from the series. Since then, the first-responder procedural has been trying to rebuild itself in an effort to also win its viewers who are still grieving Bobby.
Currently, 9-1-1 season 9 has officially entered its midseason finale, which means that any new episode won't come out until 2026. Thus far, the show has only released 6 episodes, and despite some pacing issues, there have been some major developments in both the 118's personal and professional arcs. Amid a relatively busy year that has dealt with a space expedition gone wrong and a medial spa tragedy, 9-1-1 season 9 has also dealt with another major loss with the death of Eddie's abuela.
Abuela's Death Makes The Return Of Eddie's Parents More Plausible In 9-1-1
In arguably one of its more creative episodes of the year, 9-1-1 season 9, episode 5, "Día de los Muertos" ended with a major plot twist — Eddie's beloved abuela died in her sleep. Most of the episode was about Eddie reconnecting with his faith, leading to him spending more time with her grandmother. The tragedy took place at the end of the episode, and because the series had to tackle other stories, the aftermath of this loss got lost in the shuffle. That said, it could have major ramifications for Eddie and Christopher, as losing abuela increases the chances of his parents re-entering their lives.
As great as Buck and the rest of 118 are in terms of supporting Eddie, they still needed abuela's help, especially during their earliest years in Los Angeles. She not only provided free childcare during those trying times, but she was also their true blood-relative. Now that she's gone, Eddie's parents can easily come back into his and Christopher's lives, and because of the loss of abuela, the father and son duo might be more accepting of their re-introduction into their lives in an effort to connect with family. Unfortunately, unless they have drastically changed, being around them is bad for both Eddie and Christopher.
Why Eddie's Parents Are The Worst Villains In 9-1-1
9-1-1 has no shortage of bad guys. Some of them are career criminals while others are unexpected ones. However, the 118's biggest villains are the members' parents. Almost all of them have treated their respective kids so badly, that it resulted in some of the most harrowing storylines in the show. That said, none of them are worse than Eddie's parents. For starters, they are master manipulators, gaslighting Eddie to doing what they want instead of what's best for him and Christopher. Secondly, they have attempted multiple times to drive a wedge between their son and grandson.
What separates them from Chimney's dad or Buckleys is that they still haven't changed. As recently as 9-1-1 season 8, the Diazes were attempting to separate Eddie from his son, as they wanted to use Christopher as a do-over child. That Texas-set storyline was sidelined due to the unexpected death of Bobby and the aftermath of it. Now that things have started to settle a bit, it's not outside the realm of possibility if 9-1-1 brings them back.
