We are a few weeks away from receiving the final CFP rankings, and the Texas A&M Aggies are in a strong position heading into rivalry week, where they will face their arch-nemesis, the Texas Longhorns, for a spot in the SEC title game in Atlanta.
The Aggies are off to one of the best starts in program history, and they will close out the regular season with a chance to secure both a College Football Playoff berth and an SEC title appearance, which would each be firsts for A&M. However, the only guaranteed outcome, regardless of who wins the game, is that the Aggies will earn their first CFP trip.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementOver the past few weeks, there have been notable changes in the CFP rankings outside of the top three: Ohio State, Indiana, and Texas A&M. Texas is in a must-win situation—a loss eliminates them from the CFP conversation. Even if they do win, it would need to be a decisive blowout to offset their worst performance of the season against Florida.
The end of the regular season has arrived, and the mood feels a little different this week. After a season in which they have checked all the boxes, the Aggies are finally at the biggest box of the regular season. So, while it’s not technically a “must-win” game, it is, in spirit, absolutely a “must-win” game because it’s a rivalry matchup. Moreover, a victory will move them one step closer to earning a bye in the CFP’s first round.

Texas A&M vs Tulane
Tulane is enjoying a strong season and could face the Aggies in the first round of the playoff, marking the 16th meeting in the series. However, it would be the first matchup since 1968, when A&M won 35–3. This could be a compelling showdown against their eastern neighbors.

Lane Kiffin is one of a kind when it comes to college football. During the Jimbo Fisher era, things were often contentious—especially in the early days of NIL—but Kiffin recently argued that Texas A&M should be ranked higher than No. 3 in the latest standings. A game between the two would carry a more mutual level of respect, as it could be the first time Coach Elko faces Kiffin as the Aggies’ head coach.
