Wicked: For Good began playing in theaters around the world this weekend, and to no one’s surprise, it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest box office hits of the year. Wicked: For Good wrapped up its opening weekend, which includes Thursday previews, with $150 million at the domestic box office and $76 million internationally for a global cumulative total of $226 million. This $150 million in America is enough to push Wicked: For Good past the $131 million total domestic haul of The Last Airbender (2010), which is widely considered the most hated fantasy adaptation of all time.
Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, The Last Airbender is based on the popular animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which ran from 2005 to 2008 on Nickelodeon. The Last Airbender earned an abysmal 5% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes from nearly 200 reviews. Very few reviewers could find any redeeming qualities in the film, a sentiment which most audience members shared. The film sits at a Rotten 30% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. It’s the worst-rated film of Shyamalan’s career, though he’s said openly he believes it was misunderstood. With a production budget of $150 million, the film barely broke even with a $319 million global box office total.
Wicked: For Good, however, tells the story of a much more beloved fantasy adaptation. Similar to its prequel, 2024’s Wicked, audiences are loving Wicked: For Good so far. The film currently sits at a Verified Hot 95% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, the same score as the first film. The sequel is landing quite as hard with critics, though, who have reviewed it at a 70% clip compared to Wicked’s 88% rating.
When Will ‘Wicked: For Good’ Be Available To Stream?
Universal Pictures has yet to announce when Wicked: For Good will be available to stream. Considering the film has only been in theaters for a few days, this announcement likely won’t come for at least a few months. Wicked didn’t begin streaming on Peacock until March earlier this year, following its November 2024 premiere, and unless otherwise specified, Wicked: For Good will likely follow a similar trajectory. Wicked has surged back to the top of streaming charts following the arrival of its sequel, though. It’s one of the most popular movies on Prime Video at the time of writing.
