Supernatural will be leaving Netflix for another streaming service next month. The series aired its first season in 2005, following the Winchester brothers, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), as the supernatural hunters killed various creatures on a journey to find their missing father, John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Supernatural grew to become one of the most popular shows in TV history.
After 15 seasons and 327 episodes, Supernatural came to an end on November 19, 2020. The series finale was aptly titled "Carry On," a reference to the closest the show has to a theme song, Kansas' "Carry on Wayward Son." Five years after it ended, the series continued to pull strong numbers on streaming, but its Netflix deal will end soon.
According to Netflix and Prime Video, Supernatural will be leaving Netflix on December 17, with all of its 15 seasons moving over to Prime Video on December 1. The Winchester brothers' adventures will also become available on Peacock later in the month, arriving on the streamer on December 22. The move marks the end of an era for Supernatural fans.
The hit series arrived on Netflix back in 2012. As such, fans might take some time to get used to Supernatural not being part of Netflix's TV show roster for the first time in 13 years. That said, the show and the streamer had a solid run, which was still proving itself advantageous for the streaming service earlier this year.
In July, Supernatural appeared on Nielsen's Top 20 Streaming Programs list for 2025's first semester. According to the report, Supernatural racked up 11.9 billion minutes viewed on Netflix for the first half of the year. That put the show in the 15th spot, higher than HBO's dark comedy series The White Lotus, and the all-time hit Friends.
Based on the continued support for the show and Supernatural's numbers on Netflix, the TV show should perform strongly when it arrives on Prime Video, and later on Peacock, in December. As for the show's future, there have been many rumors and cast comments about a possible return of the series. Both Padalecki and Ackles are open to a Supernatural sequel series.
Whether that could happen as Supernatural season 16 or a new series altogether remains to be seen. That said, Supernatural's new streaming home could end up playing a role in that. When asked about a Supernatural sequel in June, Ackles said, "Well, it sounds like Amazon's going to have to come up with an idea on that one, because they're controlling my schedule right now."
Ackles notably has or had many projects in the works at the streamer. Those include the cancelled Countdown, The Boys season 5, and the Soldier Boy prequel series Vought Rising. With Supernatural's new streaming home being Prime Video, perhaps Ackles and the streamer could work out a way to bring back the show on the platform.
