The New York Yankees saw Anthony Volpe struggle at shortstop last season. His play at the plate was subpar, but not far off from what it has been the rest of his career. However, his defense took a major slide.
Volpe played through a shoulder injury, but opinions on whether it affected his play were mixed. Regardless, he underwent a procedure after the season and is slated to miss some time to start the season. Given his struggles, the Yankees could be exploring replacements as is. The Yankees have José Caballero, but Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter predicted they would sign Ha-Seong Kim.
"With Anthony Volpe expected to miss the start of the season while he recovers from shoulder surgery, the Yankees could explore an outside addition like Ha-Seong Kim, or they could go with speedy José Caballero as the everyday guy until he returns," wrote Reuter on Monday.
...Kim missed the start of last season. He started with the Tampa Bay Rays, but was claimed by the Atlanta Braves off waivers. He became the Braves' starting shortstop and played well. In fact, he played well enough to opt out of his contract and hit the open market.
In 24 games with the Braves, Kim hit .253, had 12 home runs and collected 12 RBIs. He played a total of 48 games last season, but enters free agency healthy, unlike last offseason. He won a Gold Glove Award in 2023 as a utility player, but has appeared at shortstop than any other position.
With Volpe expected to miss time, Kim could get a crack at the starting job. Aaron Boone has stood by Volpe, even through his struggles. However, with him sidelined, someone else could earn the full-time job. Volpe has a .662 career OPS and led all of baseball in errors last year. If Kim can play average defense and be an average hitter, he would be an upgrade.
