China Says Trump, Xi Held New Call: What to Know

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone call on Monday, state media in Beijing said, after their October meeting in South Korea.

They discussed bilateral relations, Taiwan, and the Ukraine crisis. Trump did not immediately share his version of the call, which he typically does through his Truth Social platform. Newsweek has contacted the White House via email for comment.

The Trump–Xi summit in Busan produced a renewed trade truce after weeks of rising friction over China’s rare earth export controls, reciprocal port and shipping fees, and the stalled purchases of U.S. agricultural goods. Discussions also touched on advanced chips, but without concrete agreements.

Xi noted in the latest call that relations between the U.S. and China were improving, Xinhua reported, and that this momentum should be sustained. The Chinese leader also emphasized Beijing's position on Taiwan.

Trump said Xi is a "great leader," the Chinese readout said, and he "fully agrees with Xi’s views on bilateral relations," including that the "U.S. side understands the importance of the Taiwan issue to China."

"The two leaders also discussed the Ukraine crisis," the Xinhua readout said, originally in Chinese.

"Xi Jinping emphasized that China supports all efforts conducive to peace and hopes that all parties continue to narrow their differences and reach a fair, durable, and binding peace agreement as soon as possible, resolving the crisis at its roots."
