Chelsea would prefer to keep goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen in January because they know it might be tough to find a replacement according to reports.

It’s been reported Jorgensen is considering leaving in January in order for more regular game time with the World Cup coming up next summer.

The 23-year-old joined Chelsea from Spanish side Villarreal in the summer of 2024 for a fee thought to be £20.9m, and he’s made 28 appearances for the club.

Chelsea ideally want to keep Filip Jorgensen in January

Other than a brief run of games last season, Jorgensen has played second fiddle to Robert Sanchez since his arrival.

The Denmark international has made four appearances in all competitions this season, with his only appearance in the Premier League coming in the defeat against Manchester United in which Sanchez was sent off.

Jorgensen really struggled in the Carabao Cup tie against Lincoln, and also found it difficult against Wolves in the same competition.

Despite Jorgensen considering a mid-season departure, it’s thought the decision is still down to Chelsea as to whether they allow him to leave.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has reported for Give Me Sport Chelsea would ideally prefer to keep Jorgensen because it might be tough for them to find a replacement mid-season.

The report adds there’s a belief within the club he will get opportunities over the busy Christmas period, and the second half of the season.

Chelsea could recall Mike Penders

If Chelsea were to allow Jorgensen to leave in January then one option available to them could be to recall Mike Penders from Strasbourg.

Penders is impressing in Ligue 1 and is gaining much needed first team experience in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

It would seem counter productive to recall the 20-year-old part way through the season and hinder his development, but it will be interesting to see what decision the Blues take.
