In the last five years, Jackson State football has become nearly synonymous with the word champion.

The Tigers have won four of the last five SWAC East division titles. This year it took a hard-earned win over Alcorn State in the final week of the season to secure the division.

“It was just a tale of two halves,” JSU coach T.C. Taylor said on Nov. 22 after the 27-21 win. “We came out in the first half on fire and then we didn’t show up in the second half … and they took advantage of that, but hey, we found a way to pull it out.”

JSU (9-2, 7-1 SWAC) will host Prairie View A&M (9-3, 7-1) in the SWAC Championship on Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. CT. The Tigers will try to repeat as conference champions.

Championship pedigree is what has drawn players from programs all over the country to Jackson, Mississippi, where some have played key roles in the Tigers’ success this season.

“It means so much to me,” receiver Nate Rembert said after the Tigers’ win. “It’s a blessing to be able to come in and not only play with these guys but contribute something to the team and be an asset to this team.”

Rembert, a transfer from Mississippi Valley State, is the Tigers’ leading receiver this season. He has 670 yards and seven touchdowns. His presence was especially critical against the Braves in a game JSU needed to win to clinch the division title. Rembert finished with 100 yards receiving and one touchdown on six catches.

Rembert isn’t the only transfer playing a key role for the Tigers this year. Defensive lineman Quincy Ivory, who came to JSU from Florida, leads the Tigers in total tackles, tackles for loss and sacks. The program’s championship culture is part of the reason he came to JSU.

The Tigers’ depth chart has first-year transfers on both sides of the ball, many of whom see significant time on the field and have stepped up in big moments this season.

This includes Shemar Savage, a transfer wide receiver from Prairie View who contributed a touchdown in JSU’s win over Alabama State. He chose Jackson State because he wanted to win. Since his arrival, he’s appreciated the coaches’ messaging about domination.

“I love that everything we do around here, we’re never satisfied, and we always want to dominate,” Savage told the Clarion Ledger. “… No matter if it’s the classroom, if it’s in life, if it’s interviews, if it’s on the field, if it’s anything, you want to dominate it.”
