The University of North Florida has shot the ball well on a road trip. It hasn't mattered as the Ospreys opponents have gone to the inside to win.

The formula for Southern Mississippi’s comeback against the University of North Florida on Nov. 22 in the first game of the Pensacola Invitational was as basic as it gets.

The Eagles attacked the basket and crashed the boards, going on a 26-6 run to start the second half and erase a 46-35 UNF lead. Southern Miss went on to win 92-83 at the Pensacola Bay Center.

Southern Miss junior forward Tylik Weeks scored 10 points during the second-half run and ended with 37, on 15 of 23 shooting. Junior guard Isaac Tavares had 14 points and eight rebounds and senior guard Dylan Brumfield had 13 points and seven assists.

UNF was led by Episcopal graduate and sophomore guard Kent Jackson with 21 points. Senior guard Kamrin Oriol added 17. The two combined to make 10 of 20 3-pointers. Graduate senior guards Devin Hicks added 13 points and Dalton Gayman had 12.

On a night when the Ospreys (1-5) shot 58.8 percent overall and 50 percent (15 of 30) from beyond the 3-point arc, the Eagles outscored UNF 66-26 in the paint, 17-3 on second-chance points and 25-13 off turnovers. Southern Miss shot 71 percent in the second half, out-rebounded UNF 35-20 and had a 15-2 edge on the offensive glass.

UNF lost to Prairie View 85-82 in the consolation game the next day, losing a 44-32 halftime lead, then a 65-57 edge with 8:57 left. Prairie View broke an 80-80 tie with 1:02 left by making 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute.

Oriol had 20 points and seven assists, sophomore forward Mason Lee, a Providence graduate,had 15 points and eight rebounds and Jackson contributed 14 points and five assists.

In an 86-78 loss at Wofford on Nov. 19, the Ospreys led 24-16 in the first half, 35-34 at halftime, but Wofford went on an early 8-0 run in the second half to go ahead for good. Oriol led UNF with 22 points (making 4 of 7 3-pointers) and freshman guard B.J. Plummer had 16 points and made 4 of 6 3-pointers off the bench.

Lee added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists and Jackson had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

In the losses to Wofford, Southern Miss and Prairie View, UNF was out-rebounded 49-15 on the offensive boards, outscored 43-17 on second-chance points and 158-82 in the paint. Wofford and Southern Miss shot 67.7 percent inside the 3-point arc. UNF shot 52.7 percent overall and a 46.1 percent from beyond the arc.

JU can't recover from slow start

Jacksonville (2-3): The Dolphins' first six possessions against George Mason on Nov. 18 were foul, turnover, turnover, turnover, foul, turnover. By that time, the Patriots had a 9-0 lead and went on to win 79-57 in Fairfax, Va., in Jacksonville's only game of the week.

JU trailed 25-13 at one point in the first half and 33-22 at halftime. After cutting the margin to seven points early in the second half on three free throws by sophomore guard Chris Lockett Jr., George Mason went on a 10-0 run.

Junior guard Jaylen Jones led the Dolphins with 14 points and Lockett had 12. Four days after scoring a career-high 24 points and hitting the winning 3-pointer to beat VMI, sophomore guard Chris Arias had five points on 2 of 9 shooting.

Edward Waters (3-1, 2-0 SIAC): Sophomore guard Jaelen Nelson hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions, the second coming with 5:15 left, capping a 13-3 run to lead the Tigers to a 76-65 victory at LeMoyen-Owens.

Junior forward Keshawn Evans, the SIAC Player of the Week, made eight consecutive foul shots in the second half and had 13 points and six rebounds. In his last three games, Evans has averaged 18.7 points and 8.0 rebounds, and shot 57 percent.

The Tigers won their SIAC opener at Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., on Nov. 20, battling back in overtime 91-88 after losing a 17-point second-half lead. Lane's Jordan Lee and Elijah Lewis combined for 19 points to lead  21-8 run that tied the game 78-78. But Evans (26 points, eight rebounds) had six points in overtime and senior guard Amayoa'ah Phillips (16 points) scored with 11 seconds left to ice the game.

Flagler (3-1): The Saints won both games last week at home, beating Trinity Baptist 90-43 on Nov. 18 and holding off a late Embry-Riddle charge to win 81-77 on Nov. 20. Junior guard Mason Manning had 15 points and five assists against the Eagles and graduate guard Rahdr Hicks had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. ... Manning had 19 points against Embry-Riddle and graduate guard Tarig Daughton scored 21 off the bench, including 10 of 13 from the foul line. Embry-Riddle cut an 11-point lead to two points with six seconds left, but junior guard Camden Andrews made two foul shots and Embry-Riddle didn't get another shot off.

Trinity Baptist (4-3): A day before the loss to Flagler, junior guard Maximus Fuentes scored a season-high 41 points by an area player in the Eagles' 86-79 victory over Beacon College of Leesburg. Fuentes hit 14 of 19 from the floor and 7 of 9 from beyond the arc. ... TBC had another big individual scoring game, this time by senior guard Diego Fernandez, but it also resulted in a loss. Fernandez scored 38 points on 11 of 15 shooting (5 of 6 on 3-pointers) in a 95-87 and sophomore guard Tayden Owens had 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Women: JU stays on winning track

Jacksonville University kept up the momentum from beating Georgia Tech on Nov. 16 by dispatching Florida International 80-69 on Nov. 22 at Swisher Gym.

But it wasn't as easy as the double-digit victory looked.

JU (4-1) led 46-34 at halftime, but the Panthers outscored the Dolphins 24-7 in the third quarter, led by Denika Lightbourne and Paris Atkins, who combined for 11 points. FIU took a 58-53 lead into the final period.

The Dolphins rallied in the fourth quarter behind the play of sophomore guard Mychal White and junior guard Bailey Burns off the bench. They combined for 13 points in the final period, with White scoring eight points in the period and Burns breaking a 58-58 tie with 8:32 left with a basket and a 3-pointer on successive possessions.

White led JU with 19 points and senior guards Priscilla Williams and Makiya Miller had 12 each.

JU overcame a 35-27 rebounding deficit and lost the turnover battle 27-24 but shot 52 percent from the floor and 9 of 16 (56.2 percent) on 3-pointers. Six players made at least one shot from beyond the arc.

"You've got to stack days," JU coach Special Jennings said on the Dolphins' athletics website. "No one said they'd be easy, but it's super-exciting. We had to grind this one out. FIU is a well-coached team. I've played them every year I've been here, and they're a tough team every year. Mychal came in and gave us a spark, Kimora came in the fourth quarter and gave us a spark, that's what it's about: team victories."

Edward Waters (1-3, 1-2 in SIAC): The Tigers earned a split of a Tennessee road trip against two SIAC opponents by beating LeMoyne-Owens 72-52 on Nov. 22. Junior guard Tan Brown led EWU with 19 points, junior forward Diana Letaru had 16 points and seven rebounds, senior forward Shrica Fowles had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and junior guard Imani Harris added 10 points. ... Harris had 15 points, six rebounds and six steals in a 73-71 loss at Lane College (Tenn.) on Nov. 20. Fowles, who brought the Tigers within one with a three-point play with 13 seconds left, had 14 points and 10 rebounds and senior forward Nia Brown of Orange Park added 13 points and seven rebounds. ... Fowles had 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench and Harris had 11 points and five assists as EWU opened the SIAC schedule with a 58-54 loss at home to Kentucky State.

Flagler (3-2): The Saints won two of three, capped by an 87-59 victory at Flagler Gym over Southern Wesleyan (S.C.) on Nov. 22. Five players scored in double figures, led by sophomore guard Emerson Kutz with 16 points, sophomore forward Marley Smith with 13 and sophomore forward Abby Smith with 12. ... Earlier in the week, Marley Smith had 28 points and 12 rebounds and senior guard Natalie Herrin added 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench as the Saints beat visiting St. Leo 86-78. Flagler put the game away when Herrin and sophomore forward Gabby Bush (13 points, nine rebounds) combined to make 8 of 8 free throws and Smith added five points. Bush's three-point play with 1:21 left sealed the game. ... Flagler lost 74-70 to Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, finally succumbing after eight lead changes in the fourth quarter. Kutz had 19 points on 8 of 12 shooting off the bench, senior forward Carleigh Grimes had 12 points off the bench and Herrin added 11 points.

UNF (1-4): The Ospreys lost at Georgia 92-46 on Nov. 20, with the Bulldogs forcing 24 turnovers, 17 of them steals. Junior guard Elle Blatchford led UNF with 10 points.

Trinity Baptist (3-5): The Eagles ran up a 17-5 first-quarter lead and a 39-11 halftime bulge and went on to beat Fort Lauderdale 71-35 on Nov. 20 at home. Sophomore forward Tavesha Giddens led TBC with 20 points and 11 rebounds off the bench and senior guard Emma Parrish had 18 points. ... Parrish had 18 points and eight rebounds in a 109-73 loss at Savannah State on Nov. 17.
