Tom Hanks has been one of the biggest movie stars on the planet for more than 30 years, but just a few years ago, he starred in an under-the-radar comedy that has finally become a success. Hanks features alongside John Higgins and Lily Kozub in A Man Called Otto, the 2022 quirky comedy following a grump who has given up on life after the loss of his wife. However, everything changes for Otto (Hanks) when a young family moves in nearby. A Man Called Otto recently began streaming on Netflix globally, where the film has crept into the top 10 in more than 25 countries around the world.

A Man Called Otto was met with a lukewarm reception from critics. The film currently holds a 70% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which avoids the "Rotten" label but also falls slightly short of Certified Fresh. It was a massive hit among fans, though, who rated it a Verified Hot 97% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. The film cost $50 million to make, and it had no trouble turning a profit with a $113 million box office total. In America, A Man Called Otto is streaming on Hulu and HBO Max, and it’s also available to rent or purchase on VOD.

Based on the novel En man som heter Ove by Frederik Backman and Hannes Holm, David Magee wrote the script for A Man Called Otto, and Marc Forster directed the film. Forster famously directed Quantum of Solace in 2008, the James Bond movie starring Daniel Craig. He also worked with Will Ferrell in 2006 on Stranger Than Fiction, and he even teamed up with Brad Pitt for the highest-grossing zombie movie of all time, World War Z.

Tom Hanks Returns to 'Toy Story' Next Year

Next year, on June 19, Tom Hanks will return to his signature role as Woody in Toy Story 5, with Tim Allen also returning to voice Buzz Lightyear. Further rounding out the voice cast are Greta Lee as LilyPad, Tony Hale as Forky, Joan Cusack as Jessie, Ernie Hudson as Combat Carl, Blake Clark as Slinky Dog, and Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants. McKenna Harris and Andrew Stanton are directing from Stanton’s script, and the film is expected to be a massive summer blockbuster.

Be sure to watch A Man Called Otto on Netflix globally, or HBO Max and Hulu in America, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
