Following up on 2023's Five Nights At Freddy's, the film stars Hutcherson as former Freddy Fazbear's Pizza security guard Mike Schmidt as he navigates the fallout of dealing with haunted killer animatronics at the pizzeria.
It also features Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Wayne Knight, McKenna Grace, Skeet Ulrich, and Matthew Lillard, with Megan Fox and YouTuber Matthew "MatPat" Patrick providing voices for animatronics. The story of the film will see Mike and his younger sister Abby (Rubio) pulled back into the mysteries and murders surrounding Freddy's and its villainous creator, William Afton (Lillard).
Interestingly, Hutcherson didn't go into Five Nights At Freddy's with a lot of prior franchise knowledge. Starting in 2014, the Five Nights At Freddy's game franchise, often abbreviated as FNAF, became a viral hit, in large part due to Let's Plays and theories by YouTubers such as MatPat and Mark "Markiplier" Fischbach. Now, it is a multimedia juggernaut with a stronghold in the Gen Z and Gen Alpha demographics. Speaking with Variety, the Hunger Games star revealed that he did not know the extent of Five Nights At Freddy's "absolutely rabid fanbase" upon joining the film.
"There’s, like, certain rules of the game that..." Hutcherson said, trailing off while explaining that he still doesn't "fully get" the games. Despite this, he said that game-accuracy was a priority in making the sequel. “The main focus is making something that the FNAF fandom will go crazy for,” he added. “Sometimes I’m like, ‘This doesn’t make any sense! How can I possibly do this?’ And they’re like, ‘It’s from the game.’” Nonetheless, Hutcherson said he's "on board, but it's crazy."
Hutcherson also discussed the pitfalls of working with fully practical animatronics. Created by the Jim Henson Creature Shop, these are achieved through puppetry, wearable suits, and some animatronic parts. He noted that because Five Nights At Freddy's 2 has "more than double" the animatronics, including one that required "a team of 10 or 12 people to operate" called Mangle.
Explaining the process of filming with the animatronics, Hutcherson stated: "The stunt actor has to turn and look to the right, but then three people with remote controls have to make the eyes time with the blink. You’ll do 10 takes, because the animatronic movement isn’t quite working. That one take [where] the animatronic is perfect, you better be perfect too, because that’s the one that’s going in the movie.”
"And the animatronics may find a way to leave the pizzeria, which is a big deal," concluded Hutcherson, teasing what fans can expect in the upcoming sequel. Five Nights At Freddy's 2 releases in theaters on December 5, 2025.
