8 Doctor Doom Variants That Could Appear In Avengers: Doomsday

Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom may not be the only multiversal variant of the villain who could appear in the MCU's Avengers: Doomsday.

Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom may not be the only variant of the villain in Avengers: Doomsday. Doctor Doom’s arrival in the MCU is already one of the most exciting parts of Phase 6, and the decision to cast Robert Downey Jr. in the role raises massive questions about what the story will look like. The mystery is part of the excitement.

The Multiverse Saga opens the door not only for countless realities to collide, but also for multiple versions of the same character to appear side by side. While Avengers: Doomsday will technically mark Doctor Doom’s first formal entry into the MCU, it doesn’t have to be the only Doom viewers meet. Doomsday could easily feature numerous variants from the comics and other movies.

8 Dinosaur Doctor Doom

From A Universe Where All Marvel Characters Are Dinosaurs

Dinosaur Doctor Doom comes from a world where dinosaurs evolved into advanced beings with a variety of superpowers and enhancements. In his universe, Dinosaur Doom rises to power and crosses paths with other dino-heroes and dino-villains. His story takes a dramatic turn when a portal opens in his castle and Earth-616’s Doctor Doom arrives. The two immediately recognize the opportunity and team up.

Avengers: Doomsday will raise the bar on what Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame delivered. Dinosaur Doctor Doom's introduction would deliver a visually spectacular villain with an instantly iconic presence. An evil masked dinosaur with magical powers is the epitome of multiversal extravaganza.

7 Infamous Iron Man

When Victor von Doom genuinely attempts redemption by taking up Tony Stark’s Iron Man legacy, he takes up Stark’s superhero mantle and becomes a dramatically different kind of Iron Man. With Robert Downey Jr. already returning in Avengers: Doomsday as Doctor Doom, tying Stark and Doom together on-screen becomes almost inevitable. An Infamous Iron Man variant's supporting role or cameo would only deepen that connection.

For Doomsday, Marvel could go feature two opposite variants of Doom. It's possible that a variant of Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark variant ends up becoming Doom, or Doom steals Stark’s physical form and identity. Meanwhile, another Doom variant could be trying to redeem himself by adopting Iron Man’s armor and mission. The MCU loves multiversal parallels, and having one Doom become Iron Man while Iron Man becomes Doom would be an interesting narrative twist.

6 Ultimate Doom

A Reed Richards Variant Who Transforms Into Doom

Ultimate Doom from Earth-6160 is one of the darkest twists in both Reed Richards and Doctor Doom's legacy. Earth-1610's Reed Richards a.k.a. the Maker set out to alter Earth-6160's history, using the Immortus Engine to delay the Fantastic Four's cosmic mission. The Maker abducted, imprisoned, and tortured Earth-6160's Reed, transforming him into Doom.

Avengers: Doomsday could feature a cameo by Ultimate Doom, possibly played by Pedro Pascal. The mask welded to his face by a variant of himself would give him a level of personal tragedy and rage unlike any Doom or Reed variant. His appearance could deepen the conflict by inspiring the prime variants of Doctor Doom and Mister Fantastic to question their actions.

5 Otto Von Doom

From Marvel's 1602 Universe

Otto von Doom is the Doctor Doom of Marvel’s 1602 universe, where Marvel’s heroes and villains exist centuries early in an Elizabethan setting. Instead of futuristic tech, he commands alchemical devices and mystic arts that fit the era. His armor and mask are some of the most intricarely designed, which suit Doom more than any other 1602 character reinvention.

Otto von Doom's cameo in Avengers: Doomsday would give the MCU a Doom variant unlike anything audiences have seen before. A Doctor Doom from a world of knights, galleons, parchment inventions, and old-world spellcraft. His 17th-century knowledge of magic and technology would clash spectacularly with more advanced Doom variants, and his weaponry and magic could introduce visually distinct battles.

4 2000s Fantastic Four Movie Doctor Doom

Julian McMahon Deserves A Tribute

In 2005, Julian McMahon was the first actor to introduce Victor von Doom to mainstream movie audiences. Although Tim Story's Fantastic Four films were uneven, McMahon brought a charismatic villainy to Doom that helped cement him in the wider pop-culture memory. Sadly, McMahon passed away in 2025, twenty years after translating one of the world's most famous villains to the big screen for the first time.

It would be a powerful tribute for Avengers: Doomsday to include a cameo by 2005 Doom. The Multiverse Saga is the perfect playground to honor past interpretations, and McMahon’s Doom could appear briefly to deliver a meaningful line or share a moment with other variants. The fact that Doom is permanently masked makes it easier for Marvel Studios to induct McMahon’s Doom into the live-action Marvel multiverse in a respectful manner.

3 Fant4stic Doom

The Controversial 2015 Fantastic Four Movie Deserves A Nod

Josh Trank’s 2015 Fantastic Four Doctor Doom is widely regarded as one of the most poorly received comic-book character adaptations to date, but that unfortunate reputation actually gives the MCU a unique opportunity. Avengers: Doomsday could reference this version without relying on him for major dramatic stakes. A brief appearance acknowledging his bizarre design and overly grim personality could serve as a fun meta joke.

The MCU could also take a bolder approach and redeem Fant4stic Doom by including him in a Council of Dooms storyline. Instead of a punchline, this variant could get a second chance by standing alongside far more successful versions of Doom. On that note, Marvel could set up either the Maker or Ultimate Doom by teasing that Miles Teller's Reed Richards has turned villainous off-screen.

2 Doom 2099

One Of Doctor Doom's Most Famous Variants

Doom 2099 is arguably the most famous Doctor Doom variant in Marvel Comics. Whether he truly is the original Doom displaced in time or a copy who believes himself genuine remains one of the run’s great mysteries. What is certain, however, is that Future Doom reclaims Latveria and vows to rule the world as a better sovereign than the corrupt leaders of his era.

The MCU has so far avoided exploring the 2099 universe, and Doom 2099 would be a perfect way to finally open that door. A cameo in Avengers: Doomsday could serve as the launch point for future stories set in 2099. Doom 2099 could appear as a pragmatic Doomsday Council member before eventually returning in a future movie, teaming with or opposing other icons like Spider-Man 2099.

1 Earth-616 Doctor Doom

The One And Only Doom Deserves To Meet His MCU Counterpart

The infinite possibilities of the multiverse allow Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars to push the boundaries and connect directly with the comics. If there's one character who deserves to become that bridge, it's Doctor Doom. Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU Doctor Doom meeting his Marvel Comics counterpart could be the most mind-bending moment of the Multiverse Saga.

Earth-616 Doom is the definitive Doom, and he wouldn't like to miss an event as big as the collapse of the MCU multiverse. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse suggests its animated multiverse is secretly the same as the MCU's. The final gift of Marvel Studios' Multiverse Saga would be to confirm that there's only one, including the comics as well.
