Alabama defeated Eastern Illinois, 56-0, on Saturday inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.
A lot of younger players played in this game. Three Alabama quarterbacks saw action, as did three Alabama kickers. Hopefully some players built confidence and some learned from their mistakes in this victory. Alabama definitely has the pieces to make a run at the national title, but they need to iron out any issues if the team plans on going the distance.

Here are some takeaways from Alabama's win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday.
Ty Simpson threw two interceptions against a FCS team
Ty threw two of his four interceptions this season against a FCS team Saturday. No reason to panic, just think this is a good learning moment for both Ty and Ryan Grubb. I still think Ty is a great quarterback and decision maker, but I also think he has limitations with his arm strength. He doesn't have a rocket arm. In both cases he was trying to force passes that weren't good decisions, one of which was downfield, and the other was across the middle.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementTy's downfield accuracy has not been great all year, and those throws are not in his wheelhouse. My point is that hopefully he will learn from this before Alabama plays better competition. He needs to know what his limitations are as a passer, and he needs to stick to that. If you are an opposing defensive coordinator, you likely want to make Ty beat you downfield.
He is still one of the best quarterbacks in college football, but he needs to evolve from this so he doesn't throw picks against Auburn and in postseason games.
Jam looked like Jam
Jam looked fast, twitchy, and explosive yesterday. He was going downhill and pressing the A-gaps looking like the Jam of old. He was looking to get loose at the second and third levels. Hopefully this will translate against Auburn next week.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAlabama desperately needs an interior running game, if they have aspirations of winning a national championship. When Jam is playing aggressively, he has a rare combination of size, power, athleticism. He is one of the best backs in the SEC, and can be the center piece of the Alabama offense. Nice to see him playing fast and aggressive yesterday.
Alabama needs to figure out kicking game asap
Connor Talty missing a 28-yard chip shot is not a good sign yesterday. Especially after he got visibly upset at the long snapper against Oklahoma. The boos he heard at Bryant-Denney Stadium can't be good for his confidence either. Alabama had two other kickers kick extra points in the game, so who knows who will be asked to kick against Auburn.
Whom ever this will be, the Alabama coaching staff needs to figure out this situation fast. In the near future, a kicker will be asked to make a critical kick.
