Some classics are given that distinction for a reason. And the 1985 film The Goonies from director Richard Donner is one of the best. The '80s action/adventure movie stars Sean Astin as Mikey, a young boy who is trying to save his house and neighborhood from a developer who wants to buy all their houses and tear them down. Mikey, his brother, Brand (Josh Brolin), Data (Ke Huy Quan), and more of their friends find a map to the rumored treasure of legendary pirate One-Eyed Willie and the rest is history. And now you can stream the iconic film on HBO Max this coming December!
Mouth (Corey Feldman) and Chunk (Jeff Cohen) round out the rest of the Goonies, the name of Mikey's friend group that comes with their own catchphrase. "Goonies never say die" has been a rallying cry for the kids in The Goonies as well as for fans, and it shows how deeply everyone's love for the film runs. So why not celebrate its 40-year anniversary by watching the classic when it lands on HBO Max on December 1? It might be a perfect spring/early summer movie, but we can all still dream of One-Eyed Willie's treasure, no matter the month.
It is one of those classics where you watch it and understand completely why fans are obsessed with it. Not only is there a treasure, but Mikey and his friends have to quite literally outrun the mafia and make sure that they get to the treasure before the Fratelli brothers and their mother. With the help of Sloth (John Matuszak), the Goonies embark on a journey like no other, which includes Andy (Kerri Green) trying to play the piano in a tense life-or-death moment.
'The Goonies' Is Beloved for a Reason

This an '80s classic that really makes sense. It's full of adventure and friendship and mystery all rolled into one movie. Mikey, Data, Mouth, and Chunk are all fan favorites, but what really made The Goonies something special was the need to all stay together and their determination to protect one another. One-Eyed Willie's treasure was enough to save their neighborhood and their friendships, and it has made audiences fall in love with the story of The Goonies for 40 years.
You can celebrate 40 years of The Goonies when the Donner classic lands on HBO Max in December.
