Warning: There are Wicked: For Good spoilers ahead.Wicked: For Good director Jon M. Chu addresses a mystery involving Glinda and the Tin Man. After Nessarose's misguided attempt to perform a spell on Boq using the Grimmerie, Elphaba transforms him into the Tin Man in order to save his life. Boq blames Elphaba for his fate and then seeks vengeance against her.
This path leads Boq to the Emerald City, where he is seen stoking the mob's anger against Elphaba during the Wicked: For Good song "March of the Witch Hunters." During the song, Glinda looks down at the mob and Boq in his Tin Man form. They temporarily make eye contact, but it is left ambiguous whether she realizes that the Tin Man is Boq.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Chu clarifies that he does not want to provide a definitive interpretation of the scene, but from his perspective, Glinda does recognize Boq during "March of the Witch Hunters." Beyond recognizing Boq, Chu believes that seeing him as the Tin Man riling up the mob makes Glinda question what became of the world she once knew. Check out Chu's comments below:
I don't necessarily like to say exactly what it is... but yeah, in my mind, she knows it's Boq. I think she recognizes, she sees it in his eyes. I think there's also something she knows inherently and it makes her ask herself, "What has become of this world that I knew?"
Boq's romantic feelings for Glinda have been at the core of his character's motivations. She is the reason he asked Nessarose to the dance in the first movie, and hearing about her upcoming marriage to Fiyero is the impetus for Boq trying to leave Nessarose after Elphaba's return in For Good.
However, Chu explains that when the Tin Man turns away from Glinda during "March of the Witch Hunters," it shows that he no longer cares about her and is only consumed by hatred now.
That moment he looks back up to her and then turns away, that is him saying he doesn't need her anymore — because he has a new family of hate that's stronger than love for him. That, to me, was a big moment.
When it comes to somewhat ambiguous moments like whether Glinda recognizes the Tin Man, or the Grimmerie opening for Glinda during Wicked: For Good's ending, the movie's creative team are careful about not providing a "correct" interpretation, as they want fans to make their own decisions about these pivotal scenes.
Screenwriter Dana Fox shared that her interpretation is that Glinda opens the Grimmerie on her own in the end, but she leaves it open for viewers to interpret the scene differently, including the possibility that Elphaba is using her magic from afar to open the book for her friend.
Chu's perspective makes "March of the Witch Hunters" an even darker song, with the Tin Man's hatred serving as a larger manifestation of the hatred that has overtaken Oz. While Boq's romantic feelings for Glinda were always one-sided, the moment is deeply tragic, with his former love and optimism now completely replaced by anger in Wicked: For Good.
