At the turn of the century, Mark Wahlberg was continuing to bolster his career in Hollywood and attempting to leave his reputation as a trouble-making youth behind him. Following standout performances in critical hits like The Basketball Diaries, Boogie Nights and The Perfect Storm, he grabbed the new millennium by the horns in 2001 when he dove into the sci-fi franchise first made cinematically famous by filmmaker Franklin J. Schaffner. With Tim Burton at the helm, a group of brave entertainers set out to recreate the magic caught by Schaffner with his 1968 feature Planet of the Apes. Soon, just in time for the holiday season, Hulu will be giving subscribers an incredibly special gift by adding the so-bad-it’s-good movie to their extensive catalog on December 1.
Following the footsteps first trodden by Schaffner, who adapted his story from Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel of the same name, Burton’s Planet of the Apes follows the harrowing tale of Leo Davidson (Wahlberg), an astronaut who finds himself in harm’s way after crash-landing onto a planet that is inhabited by apes. But, these aren’t just any apes. These apes have human-like intelligence, enabling them to communicate and build societies. There’s just one major problem for Leo, as he discovers that on this planet, humans are kept as slaves. Struggling to find his way home, Leo stumbles upon several allies of both the ape and human varieties, and together they start a revolution.
Because Planet of the Apes is a Burton-helmed film from a particular time period, you’d better believe that Helena Bonham Carter held down a co-leading role opposite Wahlberg. Filling out the rest of the ensemble cast is a lineup that includes Kris Kristofferson, Paul Giamatti, Tim Roth, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Estella Warren. Considering his run in the years leading up to his sci-fi remake were filled with movies like Batman Returns, Mars Attacks! and Sleepy Hollow, Burton’s take on the classic tale felt like an odd choice at the time and remains one of the more unique undertakings of his career.
‘Planet of the Apes’ Crashed and Burned With Critics
Quite like the spaceship that Wahlberg’s astronaut Leo was traveling on at the beginning of Planet of the Apes, the movie faced a similar fate with critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 43% critics’ approval rating, with audiences targeting it with a much lower 27%. Still, it was one of the year’s biggest earners at the box office, raking in a staggering $362.2 million worldwide and coming in at ninth place in the year’s biggest financial hauls. For comparison, the number one earning movie of 2001 was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone at $974.8 million globally, with number two being The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring at $868.4 million globally. What a good year for movies!
Uncover the secrets of Wahlberg and Burton’s critical bust when Planet of the Apes arrives on Hulu December 1.
