You know the rules: Don’t get them wet, don’t expose them to lights (especially sunlight) and — whatever you do — don’t feed them after midnight. But the most important rule of all is to head over to Hulu on December 1 to stream the classic holiday horror flick, Gremlins. That’s right, just in time for the jolliest season of all, the genre’s biggest humbugs are back to deliver a collective chaos that rivals anything audiences have seen before or since. Helmed by Joe Dante and penned by Chris Columbus, the original movie blends all the wonderful things about the vibes of the Christmas season but tosses on a hefty dose of silly horror to carry audiences from opening sequence to credits. Finding a special niche between other timely favorites like National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and The Santa Clause, Gremlins is the seasonal movie for those who can’t seem to let Halloween blend into the background.
If you thought the Grinch was a troublemaker, just wait until you meet the titular hellraisers at the center of Gremlins. The opening scene introduces audiences to Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton), a struggling inventor who stumbles upon a unique little critter at an antique store in Chinatown. Although the shop’s owner refuses to sell Randall that cutie pie that he calls Mogwai, his grandson doesn’t see any problem with it, but informs Randall about the very serious rules surrounding the creature — keep it out of sunlight, away from water, and never ever let them eat after midnight. Happy with the one-of-a-kind Christmas present he’s procured for his son, Randall travels home and gives the Mogwai — which he names Gizmo — to his teenager, Billy (Zach Galligan). While Billy does his best to heed his father’s warnings, chaos eventually ensues and the entire town pays the price.
The ‘Gremlins’ Franchise Continues To Multiply
Just like the Mogwai in the movie, the Gremlins franchise continues to spawn follow-ups more than three decades since the original film entertained audiences around the globe. Shortly after the 1984 movie was released, the studio greenlit a sequel, titled Gremlins 2 The New Batch, which arrived in cinemas in 1990. Now, nearly 40 years later, a third film is in the works with Steven Spielberg returning as an executive producer and Columbus taking on directorial duties. In the years between the second and third features, a two-season animated prequel series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, explored the origin story of everyone’s favorite lovable furball, Gizmo.
Head over to Hulu on December 1 to stream Gremlins.
