Whitehaven hooker James Newton has been forced to retire from rugby league because of a serious neck injury.

Newton fractured vertebrae in his neck during a match against Halifax Panthers in September 2024.

The hooker, who had walked off the field, was later transported from a hospital in Cumbria to one in Newcastle where a special halo brace was screwed into his head and neck to prevent the threat of paralysis.

Newton was part of Anthony Murray's coaching staff in 2025 and he had the goal of returning to action.

But after receiving advice from two specialists, the 33-year-old has had to end his playing career and will now take on a new role as the club's strength and conditioning coach.

Newton spent virtually his entire playing career with Whitehaven, making 238 appearances and winning the League 1 title in 2019, while also spending a solitary season with Workington Town.

"I'm gutted that James has had to end his rugby career not on his own terms," Whitehaven's chief executive officer Lee Butterworth said.

"But he's already showing a great attitude to coaching and looks like he's thriving in his new role. It's good to still have his positive impact at the club."
