Scheduled for release next year and based on Peter Heller's 2012 novel, the science fiction epic The Dog Stars is set to be the next big-screen project from the iconic Ridley Scott. Starring the likes of Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, and Frankenstein's Jacob Elordi, the film also boasts the talent of The Substance star Margaret Qualley, who most recently starred in the quiet crime comedy Honey Don't!. Almost 30 years prior to the scheduled release of The Dog Stars, Scott was working with Qualley's Substance co-star Demi Moore on a controversial war drama, one that has become a surprising streaming hit this past week.
At the time of writing, Scott's G.I. Jane, which also starred the ever-brilliant Viggo Mortensen, is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Tubi in the U.S. Never far from a controversial project, Scott received backlash from some for its hyper-sexualization of Moore's lead character, especially when paired with the movie's supposed feminist message. This led to middling critical and audience reception, illustrated by a 55% from critics and 53% from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus on the site reads, "Demi Moore admirably does her duty, but G.I. Jane's well-intentioned message is obscured by stylistic bombast and an overload of jingoism." The synopsis for the film reads:
"In response to political pressure from Senator Lillian DeHaven (Anne Bancroft), the U.S. Navy begins a program that would allow for the eventual integration of women into its services. The program begins with a single trial candidate, Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil (Demi Moore), who is chosen specifically for her femininity. O'Neil enters the grueling training program under the command of John James Urgayle (Viggo Mortensen), who unfairly pushes O'Neil until her determination wins his respect."
Was 'G.I. Jane' a Box Office Success?
Scott is no stranger to a box office juggernaut. However, G.I. Jane is one of his more forgettable films on the theatrical circuit, with the film failing to even make back its reported budget. Made for $50 million, the film fell short with just $48.1 million in global revenue, with this entire haul earned via domestic release. The film made its box office debut in late August 1997 and even managed to top the box office in its opening two weekends. However, a sharp drop-off caused G.I. Jane to quickly fade into the box office background.
G.I. Jane is streaming now on Tubi. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.
