The Family Plan is coming off perfectly for Mark Wahlberg and Apple TV as the holiday season kicks off.
The just-released Family Plan 2 has opened to big streaming numbers, launching it to the top of the Apple TV streaming charts for November 23, 2025, while the original checks in one spot below at #2. The films’ popularity stretches far beyond the USA, with Wahlberg’s Family Plan sequel placing #1 in every market save for two.
The original Family Plan is currently #1 in Laos, while Spike Lee and Denzel Washington’s Highest 2 Lowest hangs on to the top spot in Turkmenistan.
Starring Wahlberg as a former assassin forced to pack up his oblivious brood and go on the run, The Family Plan was a huge hit back in December 2023, going on to become the most-watched movie ever on the streamer then known as AppleTV+.
George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s Wolfs later replaced Wahlberg’s action-comedy as the streamer’s most-watched movie, but Family Plan 2 is doing all it can to regain the crown on behalf of the franchise.
Critics were largely negative in their response to The Family Plan when it released, leading to a 27% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel shows no improvement in the eyes of reviewers, sending it to an even-worse RT score of 15% (though that could go up as more reviews are compiled).
ScreenRant is particularly harsh in its own review of The Family Plan 2, calling it “mind-numbingly boring and unfunny.”
“[Director] Simon Cellan Jones' follow-up to the 2023 film is so dire and comically flat that it induces existential dread,” the review goes on. “It is an experience akin to watching a two-hour credit card commercial.”
The Family Plan 2 takes a cue from the Vacation movies in sending Wahlberg’s Dan, his wife Jessica (Michelle Monaghan) and their two kids to Europe for the sequel. In Paris, Wahlberg’s assassin past once again catches up with him, leading to both action and comedy.
Game of Thrones star Kit Harington joins the Family Plan 2 cast as a mystery man who makes trouble for Wahlberg and his ever-endangered spouse and progeny, leading to a fight on a moving double-decker bus that serves as one of the movie’s central action set pieces.
Wahlberg himself discussed shooting the bus scene with Harington and Monaghan, detailing the challenge of pulling off fight choreography under less-than-ideal circumstances (via FITBOOK):
The fight was designed and choreographed for a flat, stationary floor. Then you add a moving bus where the driver can’t see you. You, in turn, can’t anticipate when he’ll brake, turn, or speed up. It wasn’t exactly well thought out.
Wahlberg and his co-stars “got through it without major injuries" but did “end up with a few bruises," the actor revealed.
The effort seems to have been worth it, as The Family Plan 2 joins the original movie as a massive streaming success.
