Fans of video games have been blessed over recent years with some of the finest adaptations to hit both the big and small screens. From Fallout to The Last of Us, a once-doomed genre has had an incredible renaissance over the past decade, but that doesn't mean all will find success. Director Eli Roth's 2024 adaptation of Borderlands seemed like a sure-fire failure prior to release, especially considering the backlash to the trailer and that the movie was arguably ten years too late. Alas, this was proven true, with the film arriving and making little impact on audiences, critics, or at the box office.
However, a year on, and Borderlands has found some small and unlikely success. At the time of writing, the movie is one of the ten most-streamed titles on Starz in the U.S. The film's poor reception wasn't without trying from the casting department at least, with several star names brought in to try and drive ticket sales. Led by Cate Blanchett, the film also stars the likes of Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Edgar Ramirez — with none of them able to save Borderlands from the onslaught of angry fans and scathing critics. "Glitching out in every department, Borderlands is balderdash," the critics' consensus reads on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the movie scoring just 10%.
In her review, Collider's Taylor Gates described the movie as a "rather unmemorable summer blockbuster," although she managed to find more to love than most with a middling 5/10 score. "It’s just disappointing that the source material has so much more to offer in terms of its layered characters and complicated themes of trauma and survival that the film seems either uninterested in or incapable of tapping into," Gates wrote in a complaint shared by many.
'Borderlands' Is One of the Biggest Box Office Flops in Recent Memory
It doesn't take a lot for a film to flop at the box office. However, to not even make a third of your reported budget back in global revenue is arguably as difficult a feat as being a success. This was the fate of Borderlands, with its $32 million global haul falling far short of a reported $115 million budget. Split between $15 million in domestic revenue and just $17 million from overseas markets, the film seemed doomed to fail from the start, even dropping out of the top five in the domestic ranks on its opening Sunday.
Borderlands is streaming now on Starz.
