Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero left fans stunned with the reveal of a new form for Gohan. Beast Gohan represents the character's biggest evolution in decades, and finally put him back in the conversation of power rankings.
At Anime Pasadena 2025, ScreenRant interviewed adult Gohan's English voice actor, Kyle Hebert, and asked him specifically about Beast Gohan and what that meant to him. The actor shared that he had been waiting right alongside fans for Gohan to get his big moment to shine.
In an interesting turn, Hebert actually shared that it was really Pan and Piccolo who are the true inspirations Gohan needed to unlock his Beast form.
Man, I’d been waiting decades for Gohan to finally stop getting nerfed! Some people argue he didn’t deserve it because he hadn’t been training, but come on — the guy’s been sitting on the sidelines for years.
He’s a great dad, a great husband — we love that side of him — but fans have always said, “He’s so strong! Let him fight!” And then we finally got it — the ultimate upgrade.
I think it’s hilarious that Piccolo and Pan basically gaslit him into reaching that new form, but it worked! It was such a great upgrade for both of them.
It also felt like Toriyama’s way of saying, “Okay, let’s give Goku and Vegeta a break and shine a light on these other fan favorites.” I couldn’t have been happier.
Gohan's English Voice Actor Confirms Pan and Piccolo Are Gohan's True Inspiration For the Beast Form

Much of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is spent on Piccolo trying to coax Gohan into becoming Earth's protector. With Goku and Vegeta off training on Beerus' planet, it's up to Piccolo, Gohan, and the rest of the Z-fighters to stop the reborn Red Ribbon Army from their plan to build a new version of Cell.
Part of Piccolo's plan to bring Gohan out of fighting retirement was to trick the Saiyan into believing that the Red Ribbon Army had kidnapped Pan. While Pan was in very little danger throughout much of the film, Goku's granddaughter was happy to play along with Piccolo to trick Gohan into going all-out against the Red Ribbon Army.
As Hebert mentions, their plan actually works. Gohan is sent into such a rage at the thought of anyone harming his daughter that he debuts the Beast Form. Akira Toriyama said Gohan Beast is the strongest Dragon Ball character, so clearly Piccolo and Pan's scheme to bring out the best in Gohan worked.
Beast Gohan Finally Reversed a Decades-Long Trend

Hebert's assessment that this was the character's biggest moment in years is absolutely correct. Gohan has been largely sidelined in Dragon Ball project since the end of Dragon Ball Z.
Beast Gohan represented the character's first major upgrade in nearly three decades, and finally put him on par with Goku and Vegeta in terms of power level.
Far from just a one-off thing, Beast has thrust Gohan into the spotlight like never before. While he was absent from Daima, the Dragon Ball Super manga was setting Gohan up as a major force to be reckoned with. Gohan was even included in a cover depicting Dragon Ball Super's strongest heroes.
All of this adds up to it being a great time to be a fan of Gohan. While Dragon Ball's future might be uncertain at the moment, it's clear that whatever happens next, Gohan will get a lot more time to shine.
