Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have both been disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix after their cars were found afterwards to have excessive skid wear.

The two McLaren drivers were summoned to see the stewards in Las Vegas at 11.45pm local time (7.45am UK time), but the omens for them are not good.

It is the same issue which caused Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari to be disqualified from the Chinese Grand Prix in March.

Formula One rules state that the plank assembly, or skid block, on the underside of a car must have a minimum thickness of 9mm after a race, meaning a maximum of 1mm of wear is allowed from its original 10mm thickness. The rules are designed to prevent teams running their cars too close to the ground, which was believed to have been a contributing factor to Ayrton Senna’s fatal crash in 1994.

b'

'

“The skid wear of car numbers 81 and 04 was checked,” read a statement from Jo Bauer, the Formula One technical delegate. “The rearmost skid was measured on both cars...The measured thickness was less than 9mm on both cars, which is the minimum thickness required. I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration.”

The disqualification will have a big effect on the title race, bringing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who won the grand prix earlier on Saturday night, right back into it.

Norris is left on 390 points, 24 clear of both Piastri and Verstappen, with two races remaining, in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, plus a sprint race in Qatar.

Norris thought he had taken a huge step towards his maiden Formula One drivers’ crown in Las Vegas, despite the fact that he had, in his own words, “f----- up” the start of the race.

The 25-year-old dropped from first to third after overcooking the first corner while trying to fend off Verstappen. But he recovered to finish second behind the Dutchman.

In doing so Norris thought he had moved 30 points clear of Piastri, who was only able to finish fourth. And 42 clear of Verstappen.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement

Even though he has lost 18 points in Las Vegas, Norris can still guarantee himself the title in Qatar provided he beats Piastri and Verstappen by a minimum of two points across the weekend.

Despite all the celebrities and razzmatazz, Las Vegas produced a relatively uneventful race.

Mercedes’ George Russell finished third, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton recovered from his worst ever qualifying session to finish 10th, having started 19th on the grid. The seven-time world champion was still despondent afterwards, describing the season, in which he is yet to finish on the podium, as his “worst ever”.

What does Piastri need to do to stay in contention in Qatar?

He needs to outscore Norris by six points. Not impossible, but even then it leaves him 24 points behind.

05:54am

Can Verstappen win the title?

He doesn’t sound too confident, understandably.

“It’s still a big gap, we always try and maximise everything we’ve got. In upcoming weekends we will try and win the race and at the end of Abu Dhabi we will see where we end up, but I’m very proud of everyone. We’ve had a up and down season and tough times, but also some really beautiful moments.

“We learnt a lot throughout the whole season and that’s always very valuable for the upcoming years. It’s something that we have to cling onto and just try and improve even more and come back stronger for next year and to put a fight at the start of the year in the championship. We are enjoying it now and we will see next week what we can do again.”

133 points in the same period. On average 10.5 points more per round than Piastri. Ouch.

05:49am

Verstappen won by 20.7sec in the end

Norris won’t be too bothered given the state of the championship. He requires just 28 points over the next two weekends. He might even get that in Qatar next week...

05:44am

Constructor standings after 22 of 24 rounds

A good race for Mercedes, who consolidate their second place. Red Bull move up to second ahead of Ferrari, who had good pace early on before it faded.

Norris swears in the post-race interview

“I said I f----- it up,” he says, as David Coulthard apologises. Would have been been able to win were it not for losing the start early on? Not sure. He was running out of fuel at the end.

Carlos Sainz now only one point out of the top 10 after his seventh place today.

05:30am

Championship damage for Piastri

Norris makes up six points on him today, extending his lead to 30 points with 58 remaining. Verstappen is now 42 points behind Norris. Still in contention just about but Norris now an enormous favourite, if he wasn’t before.

Superb drive. Norris crosses the line in second to take 18 points with Russell in third. Antonelli finishes fourth on the road but a rapid final stint means his five-second penalty only drops him one place to fifth. What a superb drive from the back of the grid. Finding his feet now.

05:26am

FINAL LAP

Verstappen crusing to victory. 5.4sec the gap between Russell and Norris now... is that enough for Norris to hold on? His pace is nowhere. Apparently he is trying desperately to save fuel...

AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement

Looks very much like Verstappen is going to set the fastest lap of the race with the last lap of the race. Norris’s second place should be safe providing he doesn’t run out of fuel.

05:24am

Lap 49 of 50 - Norris is waaaay off the pace now

He must have an issue, 1.1sec he loses to Verstappen and 0.6sec in Russell in S1. Russell does not have the pace to overtake at the current pace, and there are not many laps to get it home. Will be interesting to see what the issue is. 16.1sec the gap now between Verstappen and Norris.

05:23am

Lap 48 of 50 - Verstappen leads Norris by 10.4sec

Norris loses another 0.7sec in the first sector and 1.3sec in the middle sector...

AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement

Antonelli still has a five-second penalty to serve, which would drop him into seventh, promoting Piastri to fourth and Leclerc to fifth.

05:21am

Lap 47 of 50 - Norris slow again

I expect he is just managing his pace to get it home. He is now eight seconds behind after losing 0.5sec in sector one and then 0.8sec in sector two. That is rather a lot of time, though, despite Russell being 11 seconds further back. Still, Russell is only marginally faster than Norris. Verstappen’s pace is just mega as he sets another fastest lap...

05:20am

Lap 46 of 50 - Verstappen extends his lead

7.0sec now. Not sure what happened to Norris that last lap. Oh, he lost 0.9sec nearly in the middle sector on this and goes 1.5sec slower. I hope he hasn’t got a problem.

05:18am

Lap 45 of 50 - Verstappen’s lead is stable

5.7sec or so, as it has been for the last 10 laps or so.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement

Sainz driving a fairly quiet but impressive race. As it stands he will pick up six points and will finish as the first car from outside the top four teams.

05:17am

Lap 44 of 50 - Where is the biggest fight?

It’s for fourth: Antonelli, Piastri and Leclerc with Sainz a little adrift.

Here is how that stands:

Hamilton may be able to bring home a point but much more than that seems optimistic. He is surely too far adrift of Antonelli, even if he stops.

05:13am

Lap 42 of 50 - Norris with the fastest lap of the race

I don’t he has the pace, nor enough laps to put Verstappen under any kind of pressure.

05:12am

Lap 41 of 50 - Verstappen leads Norris by 5.9sec

As it stands Verstappen would be 42 points behind Norris and Piastri would be 32 adrift.

05:11am

Lap 40 of 50 - Antonelli under pressure from Piastri for fourth

I’d imagine he is going to try to get to the end of the race. Not sure he will be able to score many points. He also still has a penalty to serve.

05:10am

Lap 39 of 50 - Russell without any real pace now

A whole second slower than Verstappen on the last tour... Verstappen again sets another fastest lap.

Lap 37 of 50 - Verstappen flying now

Norris responds slightly, only 0.016sec slower than the Red Bull’s latest lap, which was the fastest of the race. 5.7sec the gap between the two.

Lap 34 of 50 - Norris told to be bold

Get Russell and then we’ll beat Verstappen, essentially. Verstappen is pushing a bit more now. I think Russell is vulnerable here.

Norris gets DRS and makes a move quite cleanly on the run down to turn 14. Russell didn’t really fight it too much but nicely done anyway.

04:59am

Lap 33 of 50 - Fastest lap from Norris

He is now within DRS range having taking 0.8sec from the advantage of the Mercedes car. Norris has five laps fresher tyres.

Russell says he will defend from Norris but doesn’t want to risk a podium by doing something stupid.

04:58am

Lap 32 of 50 - Bearman gets Alonso for 11th

He is in good form at the moment. His late-season results have been superb. Verstappen, meanwhile, stretches his lead to 3.4sec ahead of Russell. Norris only 1.5sec behind the lead Mercedes.

Alonso has an end-plate on his front wing coming off at an angle. Piastri the fastest man on the track, Norris with good pace too. Alonso battling with Hamilton for 10th.

04:54am

Lap 30 of 50 - Hamilton pits

3.1sec in the box, so not great. He goes onto the medium tyres... and will surely not stop again. Can he make this strategy work? He could be under pressure in the closing laps.

04:53am

Norris in third is a further 3.0sec back from Russell with Hulkenberg, yet to pit, in fourth and 6.6sec behind Norris and with Hamilton on his tail.

04:49am

Lap 27 of 50 - Verstappen with the advantage now

Has track position and has fresher tyres, too. Might Russell be vulnerable to Norris? I think Norris should just try to bring it home on the podium. Piastri is struggling yet again today.

04:48am

Lap 26 of 50 - Where does Verstappen come out?

It’s a bit of a slow stop, 3.0sec, for Red Bull but will it matter? Nope. He is ahead of Russell by 1.4sec. Can Russell launch a charge in the remainder of the lap with warmer tyres? It might just be a little too much, without DRS.  Hmmm. Not on this lap anyway.

Sainz had just come out of the pits, Piastri has warmer tyres so makes the mose quite easily. Championship still slipping away, though.

04:41am

Lap 22 of 50 - Piastri comes in

Onto the hard tyres. Verstappen leads Norris by 3.7sec, the McLaren lost 0.8sec to the Red Bull that last lap. Not sure why. He loses the same amount of time in sectors one and two, too. What’s going on? Tyres gone? He’s not in traffic.

Norris comes into the pits... decent stop at 2.5sec. But he will still be behind Russell but will have tyres fresher by a few laps.

04:39am

Lap 21 of 50 - ❗Penalty for Albon

That is for the Hamilton collision. He may get another one for a starting procedure infringement, though, no he doesn’t as it is just a reprimand. Not sure he’s finishing in the points today, though.

2.9sec the gap is between the McLaren and Verstappen. Another 0.266sec he takes out of Verstappen’s lead on the last lap. Not sure when we will these two stopping. Going longer is often better here. Albon now under investigation for that starting procedure infringement. His afternoon may be about to get worse. He is last on the road after colliding with Hamilton.

04:34am

Lap 18 of 50 - Russell into the pits

Hulkenberg into eighth ahead of Bearman. Hard tyres starting to be the best option now. Russell comes out into a nice pocket os space between Hadjar and Hulkenberg. Clean(ish) air for a bit.

04:33am

Lap 17 of 50 - Piastri gets Hadjar for sixth!

Leclerc the next man up the road. Team-mate Norris is three places and 12.5sec ahead. We are back racing, debris has gone. DRS enabled again.

04:31am

Lap 16 of 50 - Debris still out there on track

04:26am

He is now within DRS range of Hadjar, who tells his team he wants to be aggressive with their pit strategy. Norris now the fastest man in the top three and perhaps of the entire field.

04:24am

Lap 11 of 50 - Verstappen leads Russell by 1.7sec

Then it’s a gap of 2.3sec to Norris before Sainz is at the lead of a train with Hadjar, Piastri and Leclerc. A gap then of 5.9sec to Bearman in eighth who has a gaggle of cars (Alonso, Hulkenberg, Ocon, Hamilton, Albon) within four seconds of him.

04:21am

Lap 10 of 50 - ⁉️Antonelli noted for false start

That will probably be a penalty. Hamilton in 12th now coming under pressure from Alexander Albon behind. He has also been noted for a starting procedure infringement.

04:19am

Here we go

Hamilton has joined the back of the grid and the lights are on.

04:01am

The formation lap is go

Everyone away. A bit of smoking in the mid-pack from one of the drivers there. Not sure from what, exactly. Hamilton is quite late to get away, possibly intentionally. He rounds turn one as Norris approaches turn nine.

04:00am

Predictions

Hard to look past form man and pole man Norris, though I don’t think a Verstappen or Russell win would be a shock. Funny old track, this one. I’d imagine Verstappen will have a go at turn one if he can. Norris can’t risk contact, really.

03:57am

Starting tyre types

Piastri actually on the mediums like everyone else in the top 10. Hulkenberg on hards in 11th, as are Colapinto in 15th, Albon in 16th, Bortoleto in 18th and Hamilton in 19th. Only soft starter is Antonelli. Yuki Tsunoda is now starting from the pit lane.

03:50am

Piastri coy on his starting strategy

Is he going to start on the hard? He speaks to Sky Sports’ Rachel Brookes who asks him if he might start on the hard tyre and he replies “...You’d be someone with an opinion,” and chuckles. Needs to try something to get ahead of Norris. A long stint on the hards would open up the Safety Car window for him.

A patchy start to his first year at Williams. Actually, the whole year has been patchy when it comes to results. A good run from Saudi Arabia to Canada and then six non-points finishes before a podium in Azerbaijan. A good chance to add to his 38 points today, though and perhaps move up to ninth in the standings. Is a podium on? I am not sure, but fifth or sixth would be a fine result.

150 up for both Norris and Russell

Good work. I am glad that they are now multiple race winners. One of them might well be a world champion in a few weeks. Russell may have to wait a bit longer. Given the right car I believe he is capable.

03:33am

Current constructor standings

McLaren with the title wrapped up, a big fight for second and sixth coming up.

03:27am

Current driver standings

Poor old Piastri. Norris has been superb since he went 34 points behind after his DNF in Zandvoort, though. Driving with more confidence, freedom and with fewer mistakes. If Verstappen finished second behind Norris today he will still be in contention, mathematically. It would leave him 56 points behind Norris with 58 remaining. All but done, then.

Another miserable day for Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Scuderia Ferrari answers questions in the TV media pen during qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Las Vegas at Las Vegas Strip Circuit on November 21, 2025 in Las Vegas, United StatesGetty Images/Jayce Illman

He qualified 20th and last for the first time in his career. He is also the first Ferrari driver to qualifying last since 2009. I think some of the criticism around Hamilton has been a bit over the top. He has been far from awful, but he has comfortably been second best to Leclerc. This is certainly not what he signed up to Ferrari for. Well, not entirely anyway. If he can make it into the points today he will have done well.

03:17am

Norris speaks

I think there isn’t much chance of the race being as wet as qualifying yesterday, when they ran full wets in Q1 and Q2, but even a bit of rain would not be welcome.

It is the third year that the race, which is promoted by Formula One itself, has taken place. What is the verdict so far? Mixed. The drivers do not really like the low-grip circuit, which is often run on in cold conditions, but we have had some decent races and qualifying sessions since 2023.

It is the first race of the season-closing triple-header and Lando Norris of McLaren is the man to beat. That has not been the case for most of the season, though, as it was Oscar Piastri who looked to be heading serenely to a first drivers’ title. He opened up a 34-point lead after Zandvoort but since then he has leaked points at a varying rate to Norris and now trails his team-mate by 24 points with three grands prix and one sprint left. It is still to play for but, really, the Briton is the significant favourite.

Unfortunately for Piastri as it stands he has a job to make up any points on Norris today. Norris qualified in pole yesterday, his third in a row for the first time this season, whilst Piastri had another slightly scruffy Q3 and was down in fifth. Of course, anything can happen in F1 but given how Norris has been driving, it will not be easy.

Between the two McLarens are Max Verstappen (still in the title fight, just about), the Williams of Carlos Sainz and the Mercedes of George Russell. He will want to get ahead of the final two of those as quickly as possible if he is to put Norris under any kind of pressure.

Anyway, the race gets under way in a little under an hour. It could be a fun one. We will be here for all the build-up, live updates and reaction from the 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix.
