Sony's animated Spider-Man series has evolved into one of the most beloved superhero franchises in the genre. Providing a frenetic and visually stunning alternative to the restraints of live-action, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse received near-universal praise from critics, die-hard comic fans, and average moviegoers.

In lieu of the traditional cinematic narrative surrounding Peter Parker as Spider-Man, the Spider-Verse movies revolve around the many Spider-People across the multiverse, anchored by the heir to Peter Parker's Spider-throne, Miles Morales. Featuring an absolutely star-studded voice cast, the Spider-Verse movies have been bona fide hits at the box office in addition to critical successes.

Despite the astonishing success of the first two movies, the third entry in the trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, has had a turbulent path to theaters. Partially produced alongside Across the Spider-Verse, Beyond the Spider-Verse has experienced significant delays since its initial release date. However, there are finally some legitimate updates about its progress, and when audiences can expect to see it.

Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse Finally Has A Release Date

Early in the production process, Across and Beyond were intended to be two parts of a cohesive sequel to Into the Spider-Verse, and the early stages of planning and production for both movies were happening in tandem. After being split into two movies, release dates were set that would have given Beyond a March 2024 wide release. Due to the intensity of work required to bring it to life, resources were dedicated entirely to finishing Across while changes were made to the two sequels to improve them overall.

While Across the Spider-Verse was able to hit a 2023 release date, Beyond was removed from Sony's schedule entirely due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, which kept the voice actors out of the booth. Since then, the release date timeline became muddied, as reports from different sources pushed the release date back further and further. Several execs along with the directorial and production team responsible for Beyond the Spider-Verse expressed the desire to ensure that the finale to the trilogy received the proper amount of care and attention, and would not be rushed.

We now have a definitive release date of June 18th, 2027 for what has been described by the creators as a definitive conclusion to Miles Morales' character arc. While it's technically possible the date could shift again, it's far enough in the future that there shouldn't be any concerns about work being completed.

Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse Updates From The Cast & Filmmakers

The voice cast has provided some updates about their respective work on the film, spread out over 2025 for the most part. Karan Soni (Pavitr Prabhakar/Spider-Man Indi) emphasized in August 2024 that he was set to start recording in the following months while Jharrel Jerome (Miles Morales/Prowler, Earth-42) said in January 2025 that voice recording hadn't yet begun.

Shameik Moore (Miles Morales/Spider-Man, Earth-1610) revealed on Instagram that he was recording in August 2025, and Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen) revealed she was in the process of recording in October 2025. In September 2025, Greta Lee, who voices the Spider Society's AI assistant Lyla, revealed that she had recorded her lines.

At CinemaCon in March 2025, writer Phil Lord and co-directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson emphasized their desire to get the finale right as the ultimate reason the film was delayed all the way to mid-2027. At CinemaCon they provided the first look at the movie, and some of those images have been revealed online (although none of them reveal any major plot information). The score and soundtrack of the Spider-Verse movies has played a big role in their overall tone and identity, and we know that composer Daniel Pemberton is returning to score the trilogy capper.

Brian Tyree Henry, the voice actor behind Miles' father, noted that "there's not going to be a dry eye in the house" for Beyond the Spider-Verse, while other cast members have remained coy. Jason Schwartzman, who voices the movie's primary villain Spot, played coy about whether he has started recording or not in an interview with Collider, while Peter B. Parker voice actor Jake B. Johnson stated in late 2024 that he isn't even sure he's in the third movie (he likely is based on the cliffhanger from Across).

Everything We Know About Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse

Spider-Man and Prowler Spider-Man and Prowler

Almost all the main characters from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse are set to return for Beyond the Spider-Verse, and as of now will be voiced by the same individuals who lent their voice talents to the characters the first time around. Across was absolutely loaded with one-off cameo voices, with well-known celebrities like Andy Samberg, Jack Quaid, Rachel Dratch, Ziggy Marley, and Ayo Edibiri appearing in small roles (many as members of the Spider-Society), although none have been confirmed for Beyond yet.

Phil Lord has confirmed that the story for Beyond the Spider-Verse will pick up immediately after the cliffhanger ending from Across, which saw Miles stranded in a different universe with no way back to his own. When last we saw him, he was in the clutches with the alternate version of himself, although that version was The Prowler as opposed to Spider-Man. While it was implied that the other Miles was a villain, there are many theories that Miles will wind up teaming with his alternate self for the greater good.

We know Miles is still at odds with the greater portion of the Spider Society led by Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099, who seeks to stop him from disrupting canon events and crippling entire realities. He has allies in his friends from Into the Spider-Verse, along with Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk, Pavitr Prabhakar/Spider Man India, and Margo Kess/Spider-Byte, all of whom appeared ready to go rescue Miles at the very end of Across, likely in defiance of Miguel's orders.

We also know that the greater threat looming over everything is that the archvillain Spot has achieved the nigh-unstoppable level of power he sought to reshape the multiverse. Despite their differences, it seems likely that the Spider-People will all need to band together to bring Spot down, and it's possible not all of them survive the final encounter if Henry's comments about the movie's emotional impact are to be believed.

No matter how the plot unravels, Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse remains one of the most highly-anticipated movies in what's turning out to be an absolutely stacked year at the movies in 2027. Based on the incredible quality of the first two movies, it seems likely that they stick the landing, which could push the Spider-Verse trilogy to the top of the list when it comes to superhero franchises.
