Wednesday Season 2 Wasted Christina Ricci's Thornhill Character

Christina Ricci's return in Wednesday season 2 as Marilyn Thornhill was great, but now that it cost her season 3, I'm not sure it was a good idea.

Spoilers for Wednesday season 2 ahead.

Thanks to a disappointing decision in Wednesday season 2, we've lost the chance to see Christina Ricci reappear in season 3. Wednesday season 3 has been confirmed to be returning to Netflix, and while we don't know what the season will entail, we do know that Christina Ricci likely won't be a part of it.

Back when Wednesday first began production, it was a delightful surprise to learn that Ricci would be joining the series. After all, she also played Wednesday Addams in the '90s The Addams Family movies. Sadly, Ricci's time on the show as Marilyn Thornhill/Laurel Gates is probably at an end.

Wednesday Season 2 Killed Off Christina Ricci's Character After A Surprising Return

After being defeated at the end of season 1, Marilyn Thornhill's fate was left up in the air, but it felt like her time on the show was at an end. However, she then made a surprising return in season 2, now an inmate at Northern State Correctional, but she is soon moved to Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital.

Dr. Fairburn (Thandiwe Newton) is studying Tyler (Hunter Doohan) there and decides that he may be more cooperative if Thornhill is in close proximity to him. Fairburn is disappointed to discover that the bond between Tyler and Thornhill has been broken after he nearly attacks her in his Hyde form.

Undeterred and desperate for some of the power she used to have, Thornhill releases Tyler during the prison riot. Instead of being thankful, he gives her a five-second head start before he turns into Hyde. Thornhill tries to run, but she is easily caught and impaled by Hyde, who tosses her body against a wall.

It was a great surprise to find Ricci back in the Wednesday universe in season 2, but it was also a bit disappointing that she only appeared in two episodes and was quickly killed in the second. While it makes some sense in terms of Tyler's arc, it still feels like a waste of the actress.

Wednesday Season 3 Could Have Benefited From Christina Ricci's Proper Return

While it was nice to see Christina Ricci again as Thornhill in Wednesday season 2, she was such a fantastic character in season 1, that now it kind of feels like the series wasted her. It might have been better if Thornhill had been only briefly revealed in anticipation of a bigger return for season 3.

Her part in season 2 could have ended with Tyler attempting to kill her the first time, and then her leaving the prison. She didn't need to return to unleash him. While Wednesday season 3 isn't lacking in the directions it can go, it feels like Ricci could have fit well into the storyline.
