While Sydney Sweeney took most of the heat for it, she wasn't the only person responsible for Eden's box office failure. If anything, she played a supporting role in the survival drama, which flopped with just around $2 million worldwide against a reported budget of $50 million. What made matters worse for Sweeney was the fact that she was coming off of major bombs Madame Web and Americana. Her sorry streak continued with the sports drama Christy, which performed just as poorly a couple of weeks ago. Due to morbid curiosity, or because audiences are genuinely enjoying it, Eden played to massive success on Prime Video over the last few weeks. It's now heading to Netflix, where it'll debut next month.

Directed by the Oscar-winning Ron Howard, Eden was headlined by Jude Law and Vanessa Kirby, with Sweeney appearing in a supporting role alongside Ana de Armas and Daniel Brühl. De Armas was also dealt a major blow earlier this year, when her first major project as a franchise lead, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, underperformed commercially after a troubled production. Kirby, on the other hand, played one of the leads in Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which fell short of box office expectations as well. Incidentally, even Law's last two movies didn't do very well at the box office.

'Eden' Opened to Mixed Reviews

Based on the true story of a couple who fled Germany during World War I and set up a colony in the Galápagos Islands, Eden opened to mixed reviews. The movie is currently sitting at a 57% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "A cohesive theme gets marooned in Eden's melodramatic dramatization of a colorful true story, but it does provide a starry cast and salacious thrills as compensation." In his review, Collider's Ross Bonaime wrote that "it is exciting to see Howard attempting material so unlike anything he’s done before, and it’s a tone that looks good on the veteran director."

Eden will debut on Netflix on December 23, but you can check it on Prime Video until then, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
