Hall) a true challenge in ways he's never experienced. Across the eight seasons of Dexter, its first revival Dexter: New Blood, and its current reboot, Dexter: Resurrection, the franchise has upped the ante with its villains.
As the original show continued on, it became clear that Dexter's villains were really a look at his own fractured mental state. With Dexter constantly having to follow his specific moral code and position himself as less of a cold-blooded murderer and more of a vigilante looking for justice, the show's villains forced him to confront different parts of himself.
From the Ice Truck Killer, also known as Brian Moser (Christian Camargo), who revealed the depth of Dexter's trauma, to the more recent Trinity Killer, Arthur Mitchell (John Lithgow), who revealed the limits of Dexter's moral code, each killer he's come in contact with has been designed to push the main character to his limits, and then keep on going.
With antagonists that force Dexter to confront the depths of himself that he may not even realize are a piece of the puzzle, the series has done a great job choosing villains to contend with the knots he's tied himself into. Each of Dexter's opponents has their specific abilities, and even when they're able to go toe to toe with Dexter himself, he's able to outsmart them.
Dexter's Dark Passenger has long been something he's been able to weaponize when he needs to, but as his struggles began to turn inward during Dexter: New Blood, it became clear that rather than using it to his advantage, the Dark Passenger may become more of a detriment. Now, Dexter: Resurrection is introducing a villain, the New York Ripper, who could match or overtake Dexter's Dark Passenger.
The New York Ripper's Identity Confirmation Sets Up Dexter: Resurrection Season 2's Conflict
Dexter's Dark Passenger Could Finally Be Unmasked

While it's only just been confirmed during Dexter: Resurrection season 1's finale that Don Framt is the New York Ripper, they've been one of the most talked-about elements of the series all season. The ever illusive New York Ripper's setup throughout the season has made it clear that the series is going to spend far more time developing the character during season 2.
Historically, whenever Dexter has confirmed a villain's identity early on in their storyline, it indicates that the true drama isn't about the villain's patterns or decisions, but more about the psychological elements for Dexter himself. For example, the Trinity Killer's identity being revealed mid-season led to a long stretch of episodes centered on Dexter's fixation and jealousy, creating some catastrophic choices.
Dexter: Resurrection season 1 making the effort to build up the New York Ripper and reveal their identity before the end of the first season signals that the second season will see Dexter likely in the weeds throughout. Instead of stalking an unknown target, Dexter may find himself reacting as evidence, patterns, and triggers of a known entity force him to reassess everything he believes about his own methods.
The New York Ripper Has Been Set Up Like The Trinity Killer, With Higher Stakes
All The Circumstances Make The Cat And Mouse Storyline Inevitable
While there have been similarities between many of Dexter's villains, the New York Ripper has seemingly drawn more inspiration than others from one of the franchise's most intense antagonists. The Trinity Killer, who worked because of the parallels between himself and Dexter, was a hyper specific villain that took work to dismantle. Dexter's specificity, in his own ways, built a facade which was the same for Trinity.
Being able to dismantle his own psyche in order to plot out Trinity's steps was a positive for Dexter, but it also opened a door to his own decisions that he wasn't happy about. The facade both had constructed were able to mask their monstrous interior lives, but taking that front apart wasn't easy or pleasant for Dexter to handle emotionally.
The New York Ripper appears to be a villain that will draw from the way Trinity's similarities haunted Dexter, but there's a key difference in the way they'll operate as antagonists. While Trinity operated within an established pattern that Dexter was able to map, the New York Ripper is far more fluid. Regardless, the mirror the New York Ripper will hold up to Dexter seems akin to Trinity.
Dexter's Dark Passenger Connection Makes The NY Ripper's Threat Personal
The New York Ripper May Push Dexter Too Far

Although Dexter's most compelling element often rests in the way he handles his Dark Passenger, seeing him have to unravel his issues a bit more seriously during Dexter: Resurrection season 2 would be fantastic. Tying Dexter's Dark Passenger to the New York Ripper's storyline seems like the only natural thing the series can do after building up the story at the end of last season.
If the New York Ripper is designed as more of a personal threat to Dexter the way it seems, either through mirrored trauma, a competing moral code, or a deliberate attempt to draw Dexter out of hiding, the story will reframe internal conflict as external. Rather than simply killing to satisfy a compulsion or ritual, the New York Ripper may represent a twisted version of Dexter's dark inner conflict.
The New York Ripper's threat may be a far more personal one than Dexter's ever seen before, and could force him to face truths about his Dark Passenger he's been running from throughout the entire franchise. Dexter: Resurrection could push its titular character to confront his own demons while struggling to catch a killer who's forcing his hand entirely.
