Both of them broke out within a few years of each other, and have had to consistently redefine themselves over the course of their careers. But while Clooney's efforts to establish himself as a director have resulted in a string of films met with shrugs, Affleck's track record suggests that he might be even more talented behind the camera. He broke out as a filmmaker with the mystery thriller Gone Baby Gone, but it was only after the critical and commercial success of his follow-up film, The Town, that the proverbial "town" began to take him seriously. The crime drama remains highly regarded, and it witnessed consistent success on streaming this past week.
According to FlixPatrol, The Town was among the 10 most-watched titles on the domestic HBO Max charts last week, when the leader board was mostly topped by the recent box office bomb Eddington. Directed by Ari Aster and featuring an all-star cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler and more, Eddington grossed just $12 million worldwide against a reported budget of $25 million. The Town, on the other hand, was a bona fide hit in theaters. Released in 2010, the movie made over $150 million globally against a reported budget of under $40 million.
It earned positive reviews, and is now sitting at a "certified fresh" 92% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Tense, smartly written, and wonderfully cast, The Town proves that Ben Affleck has rediscovered his muse -- and that he's a director to be reckoned with." The Town earned a Best Supporting Actor nod for Jeremy Renner, only a year after he earned a Best Actor nod for his performance in The Hurt Locker. The star-studded supporting cast of The Town includes Rebecca Hall, Blake Lively, Jon Hamm, Titus Welliver, Chris Cooper, and the late Pete Postlethwaite.
Ben Affleck Is Putting Together His Next Directorial Venture
Affleck followed The Town's success with his biggest film, the Best Picture-winning Argo. He then directed his biggest bomb, the period gangster drama Live by Night and bounced back with the critically acclaimed Amazon release Air, which was headlined by Matt Damon. The old friends and creative partners are set to collaborate again on The Rip, directed by Joe Carnahan. Meanwhile, Affleck is putting together his new directorial venture, Animals.
You can watch The Town at home, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
