While Russell Crowe has popped up in the occasional big-ticket film over the last decade — in movies like The Mummy, Thor: Love and Thunder and Kraven the Hunter — he has mostly been headlining smaller-scale films that haven't exactly broken out at the box office. Among the rare recent outliers was The Pope's Exorcist, which ranks as Crowe's highest-grossing movie in a starring role since 2014's Noah. Crowe played the real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth in the movie, whose story may or may not have been entirely made-up, but whose exploits were documented by none other than William Friedkin. What can't be denied, though, is that Father Amorth served as an exorcist for the Vatican for several years, which is an intriguing-enough job title to inspire a movie. Now, two years after its successful theatrical run, the film is witnessing a new surge in interest on streaming.

According to FlixPatrol, The Pope's Exorcist was among the 10 most-watched movies on the global Netflix charts earlier this week, when the leader board was topped by Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. Released in 2023, The Pope's Exorcist was directed by Julius Avery, who'd previously made the rather underrated World War II zombie movie Overlord. Unlike that film, which received positive reviews, the reception for The Pope's Exorcist was mostly mixed. It now sits at a 51% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Dominus Crowe! The Pope's Exorcist is standard-issue holy horror in most respects, but its star's sanctified performance will be the answer to some viewers' prayers."

Crowe Is Earning Praise for His Performance in 'Nuremberg'

Produced on a reported budget of under $20 million, The Pope's Exorcist grossed nearly $80 million at the global box office. Crowe's latest release is the World War II drama Nuremberg, in which he plays the Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring. The Oscar-winner has received praise for his performance, although the movie itself has been described as fairly ordinary. Nuremberg hasn't broken out at the box office either, having grossed around $10 million in two weeks of release. You can watch the movie in theaters, and you can check out The Pope's Exorcist at home.
