When one thinks of Hollywood action icon Tom Cruise, the first character that comes to mind is Ethan Hunt. The Mission: Impossible movies are some of the finest in the genre's history, and they simply wouldn't be the same without Cruise's charismatic, daredevil leading prowess. However, when one thinks of an adaptation of the titular character in Lee Child's novel series, Jack Reacher, it is the skull-crushing Alan Ritchson as the formidable former military man that comes to mind.

Once upon a time, Cruise tried to make the character his own, and, although it didn't quite work out, he still had enough of an impact to keep his rendition relevant 13 years later and against tough, 6'3" competition. At the time of writing, Cruise's 2012 adaptation of Jack Reacher is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Pluto in the U.S. The Top Gun star teams up with long-time collaborator, director Christopher McQuarrie, on Jack Reacher, with the pair most recently combining on Paramount's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. The movie also stars the likes of Rosamund Pike, Werner Herzog, Robert Duvall, David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins, and Jai Courtney, with McQuarrie also penning the screenplay. A synopsis of Jack Reacher reads:

"One morning in an ordinary town, five people are shot dead in a seemingly random attack; all evidence points to a single suspect: an ex-military sniper who is quickly brought into custody; Reacher, an enigmatic ex-Army investigator, believes the authorities have the right man but agrees to help the sniper's defense attorney. However, the more Reacher delves into the case, the less clear-cut it appears."

'Jack Reacher' Was Still Positively Received

Even though the film didn't prove popular enough to make Cruise synonymous with the role, Jack Reacher at least performed well enough to warrant a 2016 sequel. Critics' reviews were also fairly positive, with the consensus on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reading, "Jack Reacher is an above-average crime thriller with a smoothly charismatic performance from Tom Cruise." Produced for a reported budget of $60 million, the action adaptation returned 3.6 times this investment with a global haul of $217 million, split between a domestic total of $80 million and a further $137 million from overseas markets. Overall, these figures point to a film that, although it won't go down as one of Cruise's best, still deserves plenty of plaudits.

Jack Reacher is streaming on Pluto. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.
