William Shatner's Captain Kirk is known for his extensive lovelife within Star Trek lore, but a particularly promising relationship ended because of an explosive behind-the-scenes feud. While Star Trek may take place in a utopian future, the creators behind the franchise were a little more prone to conflict in the real world.

Captain Kirk's Romance with R.J. Blaise Explained

The romance in question was with R.J. Blaise - a protocol officer assigned to the Enterprise following the events of The Search for Spock, with orders to curtail Kirk's independent streak and ensure Starfleet protocols were observed. Introduced in the 1989 Star Trek comic series from DC Comics, Blaise was a recurring character who clashed with Kirk and his crew before developing a romantic interest in the maverick captain.

Created by Peter David and James W. Fry, Blaise was a recurring opponent of Kirk, questioning his leadership and ability to captain his crew. However, as the story went on, Kirk and Blaise's rivalry developed some romantic heat, with Blaise eventually revealing to Uhura that she's attracted to the man she was sent to keep under control.

However, as of Star Trek #14, Blaise vanished from the Enterprise with no explanation for her exit. That's because Blaise was written out not as a creative decision, but due to behind-the-scenes tensions.

The BTS Star Trek Rivalry That Changed Kirk's History

According to CBR, Blaise was a casualty of the rivalry between Peter David and Gene Roddenberry's assistant, Richard Arnold. According to CBR, the two entered into a major feud, with David eventually leaving the comic over the bad blood. David alleged that Arnold made life difficult with unreasonable decisions, like switching policy on using animated Star Trek characters in the comics, and even turning down story pitches specifically because they came from David (something David allegedly tested by resubmitting ideas under a pen name.)

R.J. Blaise was seemingly abandoned as a result of Arnold's edict that the Star Trek comics should no longer include any original supporting character, causing Blaise to be unceremoniously written off and David to leave the series. However, thankfully for fans, Blaise didn't remain gone forever...

While Peter David originally left the Star Trek comics, he later returned for a 1994 special with Rod Whigham, suspiciously coinciding with a period where Richard Arnold had left Paramont and was no longer involved with the Stark Trek license. Indeed, the issue includes the villainous Darrich from the planet Landor, anagrams of 'Richard Arnold.'

The issue brings back R.J. Blaise, revealing why she left the Enterprise, giving the character an official farewell and finally revealing that "R.J." stands for the surprising forename "raspberry jam." While sadly the time for Kirk and Blaise's romance to pay off had passed, fans at least got an explanation for where the character ended up, and David got to have the last word in the behind-the-scenes Star Trek feud.
